Show School & Student New Times Newspaper Page B8 Thursday, February 6, 2003 M eSCLO(ajTlrS SCARLETT M. BARGER Times Reporter Orem Junior High School student Amanda Christensen got a glimpse of working in the real world last week. Since she is a minor, Christensen could not ride around in a police car, but she had a tour of the Orem Department of Public Safety and listened to calls in the dispatch office for a day. "I've always wanted to become a cop," she said. Seventh-graders like Christensen at Orem Junior High looked at prospective careers as part of National Job Shadowing Day. Marlynn Gardner, seventh sev-enth grade counselor, said this is the first time the school has organized job shadowing activities for seventh-graders. "We're piloting it for the district," she said. Usually, students do not look at career possibilities until high school, but Gardner believes introducing introduc-ing careers in junior high will give students a jump-start. jump-start. "Seventh grade is the perfect time," she said. Students were to find occupations they were interested inter-ested in and, with help from their parents, find professionals profes-sionals who would be willing will-ing to mentor them for a day or half-day. Students who did not want to participate partici-pate could listen to a guest speaker at the school, Gardner said. Mentoring locations included Macey's, Novell, Timpanogos Animal Hospital and Nu Skin. The purpose of the activity activi-ty was "to give (students) a reality check," Gardner said. "They might find that (work is) not as much fun (as they thought)." Some students fit this description. Four students volunteered at Geneva Elementary, three as teachers. teach-ers. And each of them said they learned teaching can be difficult. "It's harder than I thought," said seventh-grader seventh-grader Casey Chadwick. "You have to be patient. You have to want to be a teacher," added seventh- grader Nate Zamora. Gardner explained that going to school is students' equivalent of having jobs. "Work and school are really similar." She said the mentoring days were a preview to the Orem Junior High's "Reality Town" in April. Through this activity, students are randomly assigned careers according to their grade point averages. They are given imaginary salaries and must pay imaginary expenses.
