' ,2ft- Tigers beat offense-less Wolves MARTEN HARRIS Times Sports Editor Orem took control of the game early as the Tigers beat rival Timpanogos 48-33. The T-Wolves went the opening 10:43 without a field goal and scored only a Candice Martin free throw in the first quarter. They turned the ball over 12 times in the first half. "Nothing out of the ordinary. We missed open shots," Timpanogos coach Robert Louder said. Orem followed Tiffany Peterson and Marsha Heimuli, who combined for 14 of their team's 19 first half points. The Wolves put together a rally in the second quarter and trailed by only seven going into the break. In the second half, the Tiger offense was handed to Heather Keith as she scored 14 of her game-high 17 points. She was perfect from the free-throw line, connecting on all seven attempts. The Timpanogos offense again turned ugly. The Wolves did not score a field goal until Brynne Nelson found the hoop with three seconds remaining in the third. The senior scored all five of her team's points during the period. The Wolves were their own worst enemy. They added 15 more turnovers in the second half and finished the game with 29. "We have struggled with the point guard position," Louder said. "We have made a lot of bad decisions and committed a lot of turnovers." Louder played sophomore Hayli Duke at the position most of the second quarter, which was the quarter when the Wolves had the fewest turnovers (3). "We thought we'd give her a shot and she played well," he said. The loss drops the Wolves to 2-3 in the region but Louder is still optimistic about his team going to the state tournament. He said, "We just need to take care of business against Pleasant Grove and Lone Peak. If we play well against those two, then we'll be all right." Lone Peak is at Timpanogos tonight and the T-Wolves travel to Pleasant Grove next Thursday. Region Seven only gets three playoff spots and the Wolves, Knights and Vikings will battle it out for the third spot. Box Score Orem 48, Timpanogos 33 Orem ' ... "This couldn't could-n't happen to a better person," Richard's high school coach Angie Roberts said. "She works six days a week all year to get where she is at. You don't get to be great by being a mediocre worker." work-er." More than just a hoard of media showed up to honor the THS senior. Representatives from all levels of government came to the assembly to join in the congratulations. The Orem City Council, Orem Mayor Jerry Washburn and the Alpine School District were on hand. Along with representatives on behalf of congressman Chris Cannon, senator Orrin Hatch and governor gov-ernor Michael Leavitt. MARTIN HARRIS Times Sports Editor Ashley Cheesman scored a season-high 22 and Heather Hansen put in 20 as Mountain View made quick work of Lone Peak 65-33. The Bruins scored 61 points in the first three quarters and the starters rested the entire fourth. The offensive punch went through Cheesman and Hansen as the other Bruin players deferred to the two hot hands. Heather Hansen hit another six 3-pointers. She scored 14 treys in two games against Timpanogos and the Knights. Lone Peak did win the final period outscoring Mountain View 12-4 but a 40-point deficit was too much. The Knights did get eight from Abby Lyman and seven from Emilee Webster. Box Score Mtn. View 65, Lone Peak 33 Mtn. View He. Hansen 7-10 0-0 20, Ho. Timpanogos committed 26 turnovers as they were quickly blown away by Mountain View 67-22. Within the first six minutes of the game, every starter for the Bruins had picked up at least one steal. The T-Wolves trailed 42-9 at the half and their starters sat out most of the second half. Mountain View's first string also got an early rest with the exception of Heather Hansen. The all-stater drilled seven 3-pointers through the first three periods and coach Dave Houle gave her a chance to go for the state record held by teammate Mallary Gillespie. Hansen hit her first long-range long-range attempt of the quarter but missed and her next four and went to the bench with about four minutes remaining. "We could've gone for the record again but I didn't want to be accused of running it up," Houle said. Hansen finished with eight treys and 26 points. "My teammates got me the ball and I was open on a lot of shots," Hansen said. She was okay with coming out of the game when she did but wished she would of made two of those four she missed in the final period. Lora Mitchell, who replaced the, .injured Ashley Henry in the starting lineup, scored 10 and was the only other Bruin to reach double-figures. The T-Wolves did not fare well against the Bruin defense. They made only four field goals in the first half and committed com-mitted more turnovers (17) than they had shots (14). Brynne Nelson led the Wolves with eight but only played a couple of minutes in the second half. "The only thing I worry about is game shape," Houle said. "When we take our girls out so early, they are not getting get-ting the playing time they need. I am trying to get them enough game time so they are ready for the state tournament." tourna-ment."
