Spelling that word correctly won her first place in the Feb. 10 spelling bee at Forbes Elementary Sch(xl. She will compete in a regional spelling bee on March 7. Second place-went place-went to Lucila Quevedo and Autumn Kelschtook third. Lucila is in sixth grade and Autumn is in fifth. Being in a spelling bee has always been a dream for the girls. "I have always wanted to be in a spelling bee," Autumn said. "It was cool. It was scary at first, but after that it was really, really fun." Lucila said her best friend when she lived in Virginia was in a spelling bee, and Lucila wanted to follow her example. She said her second place in the contest was a first for her. "I have never won anything like this before," she said. "It is a big deal for me. Ever since I was little I wanted to do this." About one month before the contest, the students received a list of 100 words to study. Then a few days before the contest, they added 300 new words to that list. All of the winners studied at home with various members of their families helping them. They all offered thanks to those who offered that assistance. "I would like to say thank you to my parents for all their support," Dylana said. "My 9 Smooth sailing in mm A jf : eftavetbe Keys to unlock ! Lucila's parents are not English speakers, but they still found a way to help her. "They took me to this woman wom-an who helped me," she said. Lucila said she is actually helping help-ing her parents to learn English, Eng-lish, reversing the roles that some other students have. During the competition, the words appeared on a screen behind the students. The audience au-dience could see the correct spelling, but it was hidden from the competitors. While they all said they appreciated ap-preciated the support of parents, par-ents, other family members and classmates, the audience also had the effect of making them nervous. They found ways to overcome that, however. how-ever. "I got nervous up there so I pictured everyone in their underwear," Autumn said. She said it helped get her over her nervousness, but almost made her giggle. They said they learned a lot from their participation and preparation. "I learned how to spell a lot - 225 - 6080 mk . i.jajfw-1 "m s ' Patterson construction 801-7567303: pittertoiiciaitrictlii.tit) f more words," Lucila said. "I learned lots of other words that I didn't even know." Autumn agreed, citing an extra step. "I looked in the dictionary trying to find out what all the words meant," she said. The two sixth-graders don't know whether American Fork Junior High School will have a spelling bee, so they don't know if they will participate again. Autumn, however, has definitely decided she will be a contestant in Forbes's bee next year. "I will do it again," she said.
