That puts us a week and a half closer to the end of winter, whenever that will actually come. Yesterday a friend sent me an e-mail with pictures from a snow storm in Orillia, Ontario. That Canadian province is just across Lake Erie from where I grew up, so I felt like I was kind of familiar with the area. Ha! I've never seen snow like that, fortunately for me. These photos were absolutely astounding. They show snow-plows snow-plows along the road, with snow on the sides of those roads reaching two or three times higher than the top of the plow. There is a picture of a man running a snowblower, with the snow beside him higher high-er than his head. Actually, I do remember a winter like that back in Ohio. I helped my dad shovel the snow from our front sidewalk and it was higher than I was tall. However, I was four years old at the time, so I guess that doesn't count. One of the most amazing pictures pic-tures was taken from inside a 'HHP .. Barbara Christiansen BARB'S WIRE home. It showed the view out the living room windows. Other than the top three or four inches, the view consisted only of packed snow. Brrrrr. It made me think of "Little House on the Prairie," but I've never really read the books or watched the show, so I don't know for sure. It's somehow spooky to think of weather like that in modern days, however. In our area we were hit pretty pret-ty hard with several consecu tive storms the week before Christmas. In my cul-de-sac the snow quickly became packed into ice and there was not much hope for it to be plowed away. City crews were finally able to remove some of the ice from the bottom of the hill at the intersection, both making it safer and reducing the size of the lake when some of the layers lay-ers did actually melt. Thanks, guys. A couple of weeks ago, it warmed up and we got rain. It quickly turned the ice into slush and our cul-de-sac took on the appearance of a luge. When it froze shortly after that, most of the road became impassable because of the ruts. If you got in the wrong spot, you could easily gouge out your oil pan. The sides weren't actually high enough to host an Olympic Olym-pic event, but there was only one path to travel, either in or out. We waited for each other, allowing the uphill traffic the right of way. I think that's mountain driving etiquette. The warmer weather of last week almost got our circle clear of snow in most places that weren't shady. Most im portantly, it allowed the pavement pave-ment to soak up some of that warmth, so when the snow hit earlier this week it didn't stick around as long. It seems once we have had a few days of suashine like that it brightens more than the sky; it brightens our moods. We know that even if the skies turn cloudy and gray, even if it is blustery and snows, somehow some-how we will see an end to it. I sent a copy of the e-mail about the Canadian snowstorm to my co-worker, who grew up in Chicago. In Cleveland, we used to say that we got Chicago's weather a day later. While both areas got plenty of snow, they weren't as bad as the photos from Canada. We both promised each other after seeing those images that we wouldn't complain about Utah's winters again. I'm not sure how long I will keep that promise, but I'll sure try. At least until the next relatively rela-tively big storm. I Barbara Christiansen is editor of the American Fork Citizen. "It is pretty showy. You balance on one foot, then twist out of it. It really re-ally is an athletic sport." She said when she was in high school, cheerleaders didn't have competitions. "In the last 15 years it has started to become competitive, competi-tive, especially the last seven years," she said. There are five levels of performance, per-formance, based on the stunts the girls do. For example, on level two, the participants have to be able to do roundoffs and handsprings. The top level is five, and that includes the twisting movements. Ironical- ly, the Twisters are. not quite there yet. We hope to be there next year," Bagley said. "We have a lot of girls who can do that, but most of your team has to be performing at that level to get that higher score." Bagley got involved when her 11-, 14-and 17-year-old daughters daugh-ters were all involved in cheer. "They were all die-hard cheerleaders," she said. "It was hard for me to have all three on different teams, ranging from Lindon to Draper." Bagley and other employees at the fitness center got together togeth-er to create the Twisters and the rest is history. "It has actually been kind of crazy we have built the program that big that fast," she said. "It has been popular. Competitive cheer is really popular throughout the country." coun-try." Level four (Platinum) member mem-ber Joelle Hastings said the hardest part was making last-minute last-minute changes. "It is hard to learn the new-stuff new-stuff right before competitions, competi-tions, like new choreography," she said. "We have two practices prac-tices to actually understand it." Sometimes those changes -are-made ftrresprmse to judges' comments at a previous competition. com-petition. Kamil Devey, another Platinum Plati-num team member, said she especially enjoys competing and looks forward to going to nationals in April. "We get to go to Vegas for nationals," she said. "It's all expenses ex-penses paid." Danklef praised the group for their efforts. 3Wi.StoHIA-llwMrt0nv,UT 84061 55 5 I lOOlf fi ifO 75 m 755.5274 hssluSa ii lEttJkJ EBEED EBIED LBSD AS part of our expansion expan-sion program our company com-pany is looking for pt work.
