The Caveman girls varsity team took third with a time of 68.04, finishing behind Davis 1 v 1 , , American Fork's Braelynn Barron American Fork cross country earns second-place finish in Tooele Dean Von Memmott SPORTS CORRESPONDENT The American Fork girls cross country team finished second in the varsity division of the Tooele Cross Country Invitational, held in Tooele County Aug. 23. American Fork coach Bruno Hunziker said, "Timpanogos won the varsity girls division. For the first 10 finishers in the varsity girls race, a Timpanogos runner would cross the finish line, then one of our racers would. The top 10 finishes ended up being taken by Timpanogos and AF runners. "Alexis Laws took second, Dani West fourth, Jamie Lee sixth, McCall Haward 10th, Erminia Er-minia Martinez 12th, Kim Clem-mons Clem-mons Kith and Amy Riddle 14th. Our varsity girls ran as a pack. "Every girl was coming in with lower times," the coach added. "We and the Timpanogos girls are so evenly matched that either team can beat the other on any race day. It's going to come down to who's more mentally prepared," Hunziker Hun-ziker said. American Fork had two harriers har-riers place in the top 10 of the JV girls race. I lunziker said, "Abby Morrison took second and Lydia Petersen fourth." Football I Highland 33, American Fork 15: At American Fork, The home team could not find a way to stop the Highland running game as the Rams racked up 44!) yards on the ground to just 31 (63.34), Mountain Crest (65.38) and Timpanogos (66.03). "It's the best we've done in 11 years," Hunziker said. "It gives the girls a little bit of momentum." mo-mentum." Alexis Laws recorded the Cavemen's fastest individual time in the girls two-mile relay re-lay with a mark of 12.58 a time good enough for 14th overall. She crossed the finish line in third place during her portion por-tion of the varsity girls relay. Teammates Dani West, Jamie Lee, Erminia Martinez and Mc-Call Mc-Call Harward kept American Fork alive for a chance at winning win-ning the division. On the varsity boys side, the Cavemen performed even better, finishing second overall I returns a volley during a match against Pleasant Grove on Tuesday. for the Cavemen. During the first quarter, the Cavemen's offense put on an impressive performance. From behind American Fork's 27-yard 27-yard line, quar terback Jordan Lusk connected an zu-yara pass to tight end Ryker Mathews tw,., for a march that put the Cavemen in scoring position during their first possession of the game. However, the Ram defense proved to be strong and very speedy penetrating the line and was very quick to the ball. Highland's Mulli Kinikini sacked Lusk for a 17-yard loss that shut down the Caveman march. For the Rams' first possession posses-sion of the game, quarterback Nick Orchard took turns with running back Travis Walzer in rushing the ball into Caveman territory. Highland's advance collapsed suddenly as the Rams lost hold of the ball on the Cavemen 40-yard line and American Fork's Nathaniel 01-sen 01-sen came up with it. The Cavemen quickly profited prof-ited from the fumble recovery and a passing interference penalty called on Highland, prompting American Fork to march all the way to the Ram 3-yard line. A penalty and two failed passes pushed the Cavemen Cave-men into gambling on a field goal attempt, but Olsen converted con-verted on the 25-yarder. With Orchard and Kinikini making long runs at the end of rewina with a time of 55.28. Timpview was first in 54.18, with Davis third (55.46), followed by Timpanogos (56.14) and Orem (56.18). The American Fork boys were led by Robby Lee and Ryan Bradshaw, who finished sixth and 12th, respectively. Top runner Lee finished fourth in his portion of the relay. The No. 2 runner, Ryan Bradshaw finished second in his leg of the race. After Bradshaw's sizzling completion of his part of the relay, things became scary for the Cavemen when No. 3 runner run-ner Austin West finished 32nd in his legof the race. However, teammates Derek Day and Josh Stewart outpaced opponents, oppo-nents, enabling American Fork t j ' the first quarter, the chances of American Fork's 3-0 lead surviving the next quarter did not look promising. Six seconds after the start of the second mmmnvm quarter, Kinikini Tiy,, ran the ball 14 yards into the I end zone. Mason iwuuuuM Keller kicked in an extra point to improve the Rams' lead at 7-3. The Cavemen then entrusted tailbacks Olsen and Jorey Hansen Han-sen along with flanker Evan Wright with moving the ball all the way to the Highland 20, but Walzer picked off a Lusk pass at the Caveman 12-yard line. The interception quickly came back to haunt the Cavemen. Cave-men. Lobbing a 12-yard pass to wide receiver Zach Bacon, Orchard directed a Ram thrust down through the American Fork center. When Caveman defensive end Sam Katoa stopped Orchard Or-chard at the American Fork 9-yard line, Highland was threatening again. Carries by Kinikini quickly positioned the Rams on the 2-yard line. At 0:34, Walzer barged his way through American Fork's defensive line to score a touchdown, touch-down, which got frosted by another an-other Keller extra-point kick. The Cavemen went to the air in hopes of producing a touchdown touch-down before the arrival of halftime. However, American Fork moved no farther than the Ram 42-yard line. See REWIND, Page 7 to secure its high finish in the varsity boys division. Still though, Hunziker didn't want to overstate the importance, impor-tance, realizing it's the first meet of the season for many of the 26 teams which participated. partici-pated. "It's early in the season," Hunziker said. "It just shows how teams stack up." The relays involved 25 schools that came from all over Utah and Wyoming. The competition followed a format in which a relay team of five runners would each take a turn at carrying a baton twice around a mile-long course behind be-hind the high school. At various vari-ous points of the course, baton carriers had to leap over bales of hay. . . rf--.:.: ......
