CITY BUSINESS Published in North County Newspapers October 18, 2007 00301994 UPAXLP Joe Pyrah DAILY HERALD Thanksgiving Point would be very thankful if you and others would give millions of dollars for a new children's museum. Officials from the sprawling complex in Lehi asked Utah County commissioners on Tuesday for $8 million to help fund the expansion. The money would come from hotel and restaurant taxes collected in the county. Lehi city will be chipping in a million of that, and the nonprofit's executives will be asking the state Legislature in January for another $2 million. Private fundraising is expected to bring in an additional ad-ditional $10 million and in-kind donations will account for $5 million. All that will add up to the new $25 million Museum of Natural Curiosity. The year-round exhibit will include such attractions as Rainforest Safari ("lots of opportunities to swing and climb"), Water Voyage ("We're not a theme park, we're all about education") and Kidopolis Life ("a place where kids can play grown-up"), said Mike Washburn, president and CEO. But where's a county to get $8 million? Where does $25 million go? $12 million for building construction I $8 million for exhibitions exhibi-tions I $5 million in land and contributed assets I $1.55 million in contingency contin-gency funds The proposal from Thanks-" giving Point would include a 20-year county bond based on revenue from hotel and restaurant restau-rant tax. "Obviously it's completely up to the county commissioners," said Erica Brown, director of communications for Thanksgiving Thanks-giving Point. Commissioner Larry Ellert-son Ellert-son said the county takes in about $4 million a year in hotel and restaurant taxes, but that Thanksgiving Point is only one in a line-up of projects vying for the money. "It's not that there's an unending pot of money that doesn't have other requests on it right now," he said. Commissioners said Tuesday they'll have a resolution ready in two weeks. What direction they will take is still unknown. Looking For a Great iiM'i iiJfv PiPiieirifj Richard K.
