There are no dirty diapers, unless you count any stink the public is going to raise over the 34-chapter, 2,238-page (double-sided) tome that is the draft environmental impact statement for the Mountain View Corridor project, headed by Newell. The report, which outlines alternatives for the connector between Interstate 80 in Salt Lake County and Interstate In-terstate 15 in Utah County, will be released today at a library near you, in both hardback and CD editions. "It is a very frustrating part of the process," Newell said Tuesday of the EIS. "But it is a very important part of it." Utah County's portion consists con-sists of three choices, with the state Department of Transportation's Transpor-tation's preference being the "2100 North Option." It would have a smaller impact on traffic flow, is projected pro-jected to be at least $100 million mil-lion cheaper than the other options, op-tions, would impact far fewer homes and has substantially smaller wetlands impact. The preferred option is not a unanimous unani-mous choice, though. Lehi has submitted its own alternative, dubbed the "4800 North Option," though it was too late to get it into the EIS. The relationship between Lehi and UDOT deteriorated so much officials were reduced to firing multi-page letters back and forth. About a month ago, UDOT director John Njord and staff members showed up to smooth things over. While apologies were made, the city is holding firm. The day before that meeting, both groups met with the Federal Fed-eral Highway Administration, which will ultimately make the decision on which alternative to use. "They made it very clear that they made the decision, not UDOT," Lehi Mayor Howard How-ard Johnson said. That fact may help the city, he said, but either way city officials of-ficials don't plan to ease up. "I do know, though, that we will push it as far and as hard as we can to get them to do it right." Construction isn't expected until at least 2009 on the $2 billion project, Newell said, and the remaining EIS process alone will likely take a year to complete. "We really need (the public) to understand what's in it," she said. Growingyour hair out like this brute is technically an option, but we at Questar Gas think it would itch like mad and could make for some awkward social situations. Instead, we recommend gettingyour furnace serviced by a qualified heating contractor. Perks of a healthy furnace. Someone once said, "Tis cheaper to maintain than to fix." That person was very wise. And good-looking. Yes, that person was me. As the Energy Wise Guy, I can say for certain that in addition to saving money on the least expensive natural gas in the continental US, you'll also be glad you serviced your furnace because: 1. It'll keep you warm all winter long. Nobody likes to be caught in the cold with their furnace down. 2. 01' Bessie (or whatever you named your furnace-you have named your furnace haven't you?) will be a fine tuned machine, running more efficiently and saving you money. 3.
