On Tuesday, several Utah agencies issued a joint statement state-ment saying dangerous levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been found in five species in the lake. Adults are cautioned not to eat more than one 4-ounce fillet per month of channel catfish or carp, while "children, pregnant women and women that can become pregnant" should not eat any channel catfish or carp fillets from Utah Lake, according to the agencies. In addition, the offal, which is all tissue except the fillet, of "black bullhead, channel catfish, cat-fish, common carp, walleye, and white bass should not be consumed due to high levels of PCBs," according to the agencies. agen-cies. Fillets of black bullhead, white bass and walleye fillets also were tested and found to be safe for human consumption. PCBs are mixtures of up to 209 individual chlorinated compounds, com-pounds, according to information informa-tion released by the state. PCBs are oil liquids or solids consisting consist-ing of man-made chemicals that are not naturally found in the environment. At the lake on Tuesday evening, eve-ning, not everyone took the warning seriously. "That is the biggest bunch of crap," said Gordon Claitor of Provo, a retired dairyman and herb industry worker. Claitor was fishing at the end of the north jetty at the Utah Lake marina with Dale Oberg of Provo. Both men scoffed at the warning, saying the government gov-ernment was intent on scaring people away from the lake. "I'm 73 years old, and I don't believe that crap," Claitor said. Both men said they fish at the lake "on any day that ends in a Y" and ate channel catfish from the lake for dinner on Monday night. They eat catfish from the lake twice a week on average, they said, and the new warning would not change that. "You've got to grill it with a little salt and pepper," Oberg said. "You've got to smear a little butter on it." Another fisherman, who de WAMTBTO WATER, WELL RIGHTS & IRRIGATION. He too said the warning would not change his ways. Fishing closer to the shore on the same jetty, Brad Bennett Ben-nett of Provo said he last ate channel catfish from the lake two months ago and would not stop eating it because of the warning. "It's not like I eat it every day," he said. Christina McNaughton of the Utah Department of Health said some ethnic populations eat the offal of fish as part of their regular diet and should heed the new warning. The Environmental En-vironmental Protection Agency Agen-cy says PCBs testing above 0.08 parts per million in fish can put people in danger for non-cancer related diseases, and levels above 0.02 ppm can be linked to cancer. Of the fillets fil-lets of channel catfish tested in Utah Lake, the average level of PCBs was 0.105 ppm, and 0.081 ppm in common carp. The offal of the channel catfish cat-fish tested at 0.161 ppm, double the level linked to non-cancerous diseases, she said. John Whitehead of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality said the state hopes to begin testing lake sediments for PCB concentrations in the next few months and may be able to narrow down the most polluted areas for possible cleanup, but they must first find funding. It is likely that the PCBs in the lake came from nearby industry, he said. For a time PCBs were used in electrical electri-cal transformers, though PCBs are no longer manufactured in the United States. It was first announced in May 2006 that PCBs had been found in carp. A state and federal fed-eral effort to rid Utah Lake of carp in order to increase the population of endangered June sucker led to testing of carp last year. Channel catfish and carp are bottom feeders, collecting PCBs from the mud over time, Whitehead said. PCBs collect in the fat and tissue of fish and are not removed naturally. I'm 73 years old, and I don't believe that crap," Gordon Claitor PROVO RESIDENT based on long-term consumption consump-tion and are not tied to eating fish occasionally, according to the agencies. There are no health risks associated with PCBs for other uses of the lake, such as swimming, boating and water skiing. According to fishadvisories. utah.gov, several studies have linked adverse health effects to PCB exposure, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and effects on the cardiovascular, hepatic, immune, musculoskeletal, musculoskel-etal, endocrine, gastrointestinal gastrointesti-nal and dermal systems. They also may affect hypertension, diabetes, liver disease, disrupt reproductive function and cause neurobehavioral and developmental deficits to occur oc-cur in newborns and continue through school-aged children who had in utero exposure to PCB.
