Rigert NORTH COUNTY STAFF- Jenni Greer said she came upon the idea one day when thinking about her family's service ser-vice to their country and how the they could best observe the nation's birthday this year. When the couple was first married, Keith Greer served iseveral years in the Army and Utah Army National Guard. Oldest son Seth followed in his father's footsteps and is currently serving in the Army Reserve, including a stint in the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar. Second oldest son Josiah signed up with Army as a member of the storied 3rd Cavalry Divi sion and is currently a Humvee chauffeur in Baghdad with his unit. "I was very proud that they would sacrifice their time to (serve in uniform)," she said. "This was kind of going to be a tradition in our family, something special they could remember." The Greers say their small Fourth of Jury tribute isn't just to recognize members of their family who have served in the military, but to honor all those who have sacrificed to protect Americans' freedoms. Keith Greer has fond memo ries of his Army days and believes anyone who serves in uniform gets a unique perspective perspec-tive on what it means to be an American. "It's kind of like Scouting in a way. You learn about the flag ... with a rifle on your shoulder, so to speak, and you keep it with you," he said. "Every time they raise the flag, you realize that a lot of people have fallen for every ev-ery time that flag is raised." Seth Greer said his time with the Army Reserve 395th Finance Battalion has been "a life-altering experience." "It made me a much more mature person," he said. "I gained discipline ... and a lot of life-long friends." Part of what prompted Jenni Greer to plan Wednesday's tribute was that she felt the nature of people's Fourth of Jury activities and expressions of patriotism have drifted from gratitude and reflection to partying par-tying and water-skiing. "I remember learning a lot (about patriotism) in school ... and I don't see it as much anymore," any-more," she said. With his military background, back-ground, Seth Greer says Independence In-dependence Day and similar holidays celebrating America and its armed forces take on a whole new meaning. "I just feel a sense of pride, pride in myself and in the country," coun-try," he said. The Greers said it is frightening fright-ening at times with their son Josiah serving in Iraq and seeing see-ing other servicemen returning home with injuries or in flag-draped flag-draped coffins. "But that's how you learn what freedom is," Keith Greer said. "It's something that has to be paid for in blood, unfortunately, unfor-tunately, because that's how important it is." Mi mong familiar Fourth of July celebration icons including hot does. hof J ith flag f watermelon and U U fireworks, one Orem family added one not-so-ubiquitous item to their holiday list: a new full-size flag pole. Keith and Jenni Greer erected erect-ed the metal standard in the front yard of their west Orem home this week to dedicate the pole's first flag raising Wednesday Wednes-day to America's military veterans. vet-erans. The parents of five children (two of whom have served in the Army like Keith Greer), the Greers have invited family, fam-ily, friends and neighbors to a special tribute to the troops Wednesday afternoon on their front lawn with photos and stories. sto-ries.
