Show United Way offers help for newi parents with 'Welcome Baby' New Utah.- Thursday, May 15, 2003 - Page 13 SCERA sets auditions for les Mis' With 350 babies born each month at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, first-time parents Patrick and Angela Jaramillo were not alone in their feelings of uncertainty when their baby was born. After the excitement of bringing home a new baby, many couples find themselves them-selves looking at each other wondering what to do next. While they received formal training on how to have a baby, most embark on the biggest adventure of their life, parenthood, without an instruction manual or professional pro-fessional coach - until now. United Way and Utah County Heath Department have developed an informative informa-tive program, "Welcome Baby," to help couples weather the transition to parenthood. Welcome Baby provides couples with a free, one-on-one education as community nurses and other trained volunteers come directly to the parent's home. These monthly home visits vis-its focus on helping new parents provide their baby with a healthy beginning, learn basic parenting skills and explore available community com-munity resources. Welcome Baby has also recently incorporated new information informa-tion from Brigham Young University on marital relationship rela-tionship enhancement into the home visits. The insight, comfort and education provided during each home visit is invaluable," invalu-able," said Susanne Johnson, John-son, Welcome Baby volunteer volun-teer coordinator. "Our intent is to provide couples with the resources they need to get a good start. For many this also includes information informa-tion on how to strengthen their relationship as a couple cou-ple during this time of intense change." The information home visitors provide on strengthening strength-ening a marital relationship was researched and developed devel-oped by a team of professional profes-sional family life educators, marriage counselors and nurse educators who understand under-stand the impact becoming parents may have on a relationship. rela-tionship. "Parents may become so consumed with the demands of caring for then-new then-new child that they forget to address how it is affecting their relationship as a couple," cou-ple," said Alan Hawkins, professor of family life at BYU. "We hope the information informa-tion provided through Welcome Wel-come Br by will provide them with some tools to enhance their marriage." Other primary areas of focus by home visitors include: Healthy Beginnings: well-child exams, immunizations, immu-nizations, starting solid foods, spacing, diet and nutrition, breast or bottle feeding, normal physical development, shaken baby syndrome and SIDs. Knowledgeable Parent ing: developmental milestones, mile-stones, infant cues and sleep states, your child's brain and how to stimulate learning, parent-child relationship, rela-tionship, proper nutrition, safety, discipline, trust and attachment. Family Stability: neighborhood, neigh-borhood, friends and family, religious organization, medical, med-ical, financial, housing, local United Way, Health Department Depart-ment resources, vocational and education opportunities. opportuni-ties. To date, 34 Welcome Baby volunteers visit 77 first-time parents in Utah County and will soon be serving over 100 families. "It was such a relief to have a professional come to our home and provide us with one-on-one instructions," instruc-tions," said Angela Jaramil-lo, Jaramil-lo, Welcome Baby participant. partici-pant. "I appreciated our home visitor's willingness to answer our specific questions ques-tions and help us in areas of uncertainty. "She really went out of her way to customize each visit to our individual needs and to bring additional materials covering topics we were most interested ih. Our home visitor gave me the confidence I needed to handle the many new challenges chal-lenges I was facing." To participate in Welcome Wel-come Baby contact the Utah County Health Department at 370-8700 or United Way at 374-8108. VIP ARTS announces the opening of "The Fantasticks" Fanta-sticks" at the Little Brown Theatre. The Fantasticks the worlds longest running musical first opened on May 3, 1960, in New York City and closed in Jan. 13, 2002 with 17,162 performances. The lyrics and book by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt have provided the world with a wonderful piece of American musical theatre with headliner songs like "Try to Remember." The staging in the intimate inti-mate setting of the Little Brown Theatre will place the audience close to the action of this musical metaphor depicting young love, as the beautiful Louisa, played by Jenny Lynn, tries to pull away from her father, Mr. Bel-lomy Bel-lomy (Dennis Hess), into the world of romance and first love with her boy friend, Matt, played by Zack Neipp. Matt's father, Mr. Hucklebee (Rulon Gal loway) is very much in opposition to these two getting get-ting together, or so it appears. Others in the cast are: Henry the Indian (Tom Lamoreax), Mortimer (Emily Spackman) and The Mutes (Ricardo Hernandez and Britney Penrose). This production is directed by veteran director Betty Lee, with music direction by Clare Johnson, and choreography chore-ography by Ashleigh Johnson. John-son. Live music will accompany accom-pany the acting ensemble. This show will play May 30-June 30 each Friday, Saturday, and Monday at the Little Brown Theatre, 239 S. Main in Springville. Tickets are: $9 general admission, $8 seniors and students, $7 for children 11 and under.
