Show a New Utah - Thursday, August 15, 2002 - Page 14 Obituaries Wanda Snow Petersen David West Afton Nelson Furden IV. Wanda Snow Petersen, age 90, died August 9, 2002 in her home. She was born December 12, 19U in Emery County to Mason Levi and Sarah B. Marsing Snow. She married Lorenzo E. Peterson Peter-son June 28, 1934 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Wanda received her Master Mas-ter of Science in Education at BYU in 1963, and for 38 years taught school, mostly grades one to three at Wellington School in Carbon Car-bon County and Greenwood and Shelley Schools in American Fork. She was active in many organizations, including 4-H 4-H clubs, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Democratic Party, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, the American Fork Art Council, The League of Utah Writers, and Penn Women. In addition, addi-tion, she served in the Primary Pri-mary and Young Women's organizations of the LDS Church. She has written and published five books. She is survived by four children: Kay Marie Gold-ing, Gold-ing, La Habra, California; Myrna Ellen Olsen, American Ameri-can Fork; Norma LaRene Despain, Honolulu, Hawaii; and Jim Lorenzo Petersen, American Fork. She has 13 grandchildren, 26 greatgrandchildren great-grandchildren and five great-great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 14, in the American Fork Hill-crest Hill-crest Stake Center. Burial was in the Ferron, Utah Cemetery, under the direction direc-tion of Anderson & Sons Mortuary, American Fork. Clara Val Laurie Preece Beal Clara Val Larie Preece Beal, 73, of Provo, Utah on 7 died July 2002 was group leader in the Young Women's Program. S u r - 19, She born r September 26, 1928 in Vernal, Utah a daughter of John Ronald Preece and Clara Noel Preece. She married Steven Beal on June 9, 1952 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Val graduated from BYU and began teaching high school in Duchesne, UT, and then taught elementary school in Logan, UT. Val moved to California in 1958, there she taught for 31 years in the At water Elementary Ele-mentary School District, teaching several years at the elementary level but primarily teaching at the junior high school. She was an avid reader and shared her love of reading with all she came in contact with. Traveling was another love of Val's and she visited many countries over the years. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings during her life, her favorite as a youth Ray Bowers Charles Ray Bowers, 75, died August 7, 2002 at his home in American F J Fork. He was born June 25, 1927 in Clearfield, Utah to Paul and Sadie Painter Bowers. He married Mar-lene Mar-lene Sherwood February 10, 1949. Their marriage was solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple April 6, 1989. As a young boy he began his career in auto body work. He worked for Holley Auto as Body Shop Manager Manag-er for over 30 years. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters: Leland Preece of Nibley, UT, Barbara Barrus of Provo, UT, Adoree Bingham Bing-ham of Walla Walla, WA, Stuart Preece of Layton, Utah. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 19, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in the Pleasant View 3rd Ward Chapel, 650 Stadium Ave in Provo. Interment will take place in the American Fork City cemetery. Services under the direction of Sund-berg-Olpin Funeral Home of Orem. He is survived by his wife, Marlene, American Fork; his children: Paula (Bruce) Newman, Denver, Colorado; Rex Bowers, Pleasant Grove; Rick Bowers, Bow-ers, Riverton; Robert (Valoy) Bowers, Pleasant Grove; 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, sis-ter, Wanda Brass, Twin Falls, ID; and a brother, Dick Bowers, Lindon. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were-Monday, were-Monday, August 12th in the American Fork 6th Ward, 320 North 100 East. Burial was in the Levan Cemetery. He was born May 28, 1928 in Pleasant Grove, Utah to V a r i a n White and Edna Binns West. He married mar-ried Phyllis Garland on June 4, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. David grew up in Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1946. He served as a missionary in the Great Lakes Mission from 1950-1952. It was during his mission, he baptized his future bride, Phyllis and all her family. David worked for Alpine School District from 1955-1985, mostly as a janitor at Pleasant Grove High School. David is known in the community for his acts of service and his incredible work ethic. David was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings during his life including: two Bishoprics, Stake High Councilor, Ordinance Work er in both Provo and Mt. Timpanogos Temples, High Priest Group Leader and as a missionary with his wife Phyllis in the Albuquerque, New Mexico Mission. David's love of the gospel through missionary work, temple work, gospel study, and service to others will be the legacy he leaves. He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Pleasant Grove and nine children: Michael (Penny) West, Kevin West, Kim (Debbie) West, Mark (Kayleen) West, Holly (Tim) Beavers, Debra (Bob) Crow; Robin (Mark) Whittle, Lance (Leslie) West, Cindy (James) Mena; 32 grandchildren grand-children and 3 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Varian LaVerl West. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 16, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in the Pleasant Grove Stake Center, Cen-ter, 275 East 500 South, Pleasant Grove. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Olpin Family Fam-ily Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Friday one hour prior to services. Giovannoni 1 i Fk 1 Harold Wayne Giovannoni, Giovan-noni, age 78 of Lehi, died August 8, 2002 at his home of conditions related to his kidney illness. He was born May 24, 1924 in Menoken, North Dakota to Rosa and Adolph Giovannoni, Sr. He married Meda Mitchell, Dec. 29, 1947 in Bismarck, North Dakota. Harold served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines. He worked at Kennecott Copper Cop-per Corp. where he retired after 30 years. He loved fishing, hunting, farming, and gardening and was greatly loved by his family and many friends. Survived by his wife, Meda, of Lehi, two sons and three daughters: Larry (Diane), Highland; Brian (Wendie), Fairview; Diane (Ernest) Eddy and Susan (Richard) McEwan, both of Lehi; Donna (Kevin) Harley, Fayetteville, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Cherrie Giovannoni, Lehi; brother and sisters, Eugene (Donna), Westby, Wisconsin; Rose Thies, Portland, Port-land, OR; Ancilla Carrico, Maryland. He was preceded in death by son, Kerry; daughter, daugh-ter, Lisa; and granddaughter, granddaugh-ter, Bethany. Funeral, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 in the Lehi Utah Stake Center. Center Street, American Fork Afton Nelson Furden died Monday, Aug. 12, of causes incident to age. She was born Jan. 12, 1917, to Carl and Elnora Nelson Nel-son in Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove. She attended attend-ed local schools. She married Charles Furden, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her children: Ronald, Anna Lee, Dennis, Linda, Mary and Pam. She was preceded in death by an older sister, Marie Johnson, and a brother, broth-er, Eugene Nelson. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at noon in the Valley View Funeral Home, 4300 W. 4100 South, West Valley City. There will be a viewing from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery Ceme-tery at approximately 2-2:30 2-2:30 p.m. Venoy Turner Venoy James Turner, age 83, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at his home following fol-lowing a lingering illness. Born September 6, 1918, in Canada, to William E. and Myrtle Iva Turner. He lived for six years in Canada Cana-da then came to Lehi, where he lived until he was married mar-ried to Eva Buhler on June 22, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Venoy is the father of seven children: Janice (Jim) Comer, of Gillette, Wyo.; Joyce (John) Turner, Orem; Ronald Venoy (Jeanene) Turner, American Fork; Kim Eugean (Melanie) Turner, West Jordan; Gwen (Michael) Petersen, Vernal. 34 Grandchildren and 24 Great-Grandchildren and expecting four more.
