By winning the tournament, tourna-ment, National joined a very small club of northern Utah County league teams privileged to have clinched ithe WBBA title. The only other two all-star teams to ' have done that were Alpine and American Fork Bee- ' Hive. ''"This is the best 12-year-old team I've ever seen," said National coach Clark ( Pitcher. He said much unity ' had existed among the players, play-ers, who also played together togeth-er this year on the American Ameri-can Fork Playerzz, a Super-league Super-league team. Clark added, "This was the same team that took the 10-year-olds state title two years ago." In their first game of last week's tournament, they showed great potential for winning the Series when they erased the Vernal Red League 13-0 in an Aug. 6 ' game. The first inning of that contest ended i a 0-!; deadlock. Andy Lewis and Jace Evans also each smacked a double in the rally. Providence finally got on the board in the top of the fourth with two runs, but they turned out to be meaningless. mean-ingless. In the Nationals' last pool game of the Series, they found Washington Terrace Ter-race to be the toughest team. It was of one of only two teams which managed to go six full innings with National, which finally beat Washington Terrace 8-2 in an Aug. 8 thriller. , It opened with Washington Washing-ton Terrace's Taylor Baird singling into left. In emerging undefeated from their pool, the Nationals Nation-als found themselves pitted against the Rigby (Idaho) League all-stars in the semifinals Aug. 9. During the five innings that National thrashed it 10-0, Rigby went through four mid-inning pitching changes in a vain hope to find a hurler who could shut the Nationals down. As he pitched during the first three innings, Judd gave up only one hit, a one-out, one-out, second-inning single by Jake Klukis. Meanwhile, National took command of the scoreboard in the bottom bot-tom of the first. That inning, Judd doubled in two runs and Perry singled in another anoth-er two. Rigby pitcher Ross Mar-low Mar-low held National's lead to 4-0 until the fourth, when Christenson clubbed a one-run one-run single off him to open a five-run rally, highlighted by Sechrest's singling in two runs. , Singling in the fifth, Searle came home on a Christenson sacrifice fly to end the game and advance National to its first appearance appear-ance in the WBBA title game since the mid-1990's. The team challenging them for the association's championship pennant was Salt Lake City's Avenues League, which National trounced 12-1. After seeing Avenues defeat defending champion Alpine 9-2 in the other semifinal, the Nationalists were wise not to take their Salt Lake opponents lightly. In the top of the first inning, National demonstrated demon-strated what kind of evening Avenues would be in for. The first two National Nation-al hitters, Searle and Lewis, each clubbed a single. Soon, Searle came home on an error, and Judd doubled in Lewis. After National loaded the bases on one out, it picked up another three runs on a Bagley walk and a Jones single. with Football 5I( title 45-49-Jay Wentz. 50-54 - Dale Greenwood, Glen Clark, David Bird. 55 - Wayne Mangelson, Carl Ingersoll, Davis Knight. Darren Bagley kept National from picking hp runs in the fifth, necessitating necessitat-ing that the game be settfed in the sixth. Until the bottom of the sixth, National's pitching staff had held Avenues to one hit, a second-inning, Darren Bagley single. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Zunbrunnen bunted a single, then duped National into staging a squeeze play between first and second while Chuck Pribble scorted a run. Zunbrunnen tried stealing steal-ing home, but catcher Lewis tagged him out. An Avemfes coach protested the tagout, and the umpire ejected him.
