Show I ERA Exposed at State Legislative Hearings byAftonHealey Congress approved the E R A. on March 22, 1972. The same militant forces that pressured Congress into voting for the E.R.A. were organized at state levels to push for ratification. Many states hurriedly ratified without hearings or debates. Hawaii ratified within two hours. Some 22 states, including California, ratified within eight months. Fortunately, some states recognized the importance of a constitutional amendement and its attack on state governments. In Arizona, Rep. Donna Carlson said, "The E.R.A. is without a doubt one of the most devastating attacks on state government that our country has ever witnessed, and state legislators who vote for a constitutional amendement with a clause like Sec. 2 of the E.R.A. are betraying the people who trusted them to uphold their right to local government." Some state hearings showed that the E.R.A. cannot stand full exposure because the ramifications are definitely detrimental to women. At Missouri a pro-E.R.A. lawyer admitted that E.R.A. would deprive single sex schools and colleges of their tax-exempt status. If this is the case what would it do to churches that recognize the sex difference. During hearings in Texas, four out of five pro-E.R.A. attorneys admitted that E.R.A. will legalize homosexual "marriage." (Yale Law Journal, Jan. 1973.) The Ohio task force report states that the "equality principle of E. R.A. would require new public policy to have child care centers because women who are mothers need the same freedom and opportunity as men who are fathers." If mom works, she will be responsible for her own credit and bills, and father is released of his responsibility as head of the home (patriarchal order abolished) In Nebraska, Speaker of the State Legislature Richard F. Proud explained why so many radicals support the E.R.A. He said, "The answer to this is not quite so apparent until you have read the literature of the movement's philosophers or theorists-they really believe that traditional family home life as embodied by a husband and wife with children is passe'. They believe that a woman's destined role in our society is not that of a homemaker but rather that she should get away from children and "fulfill" herself in the work-a-day world in an environment en-vironment outside the home. Of course, the libbers don't give publicity to the fact that a woman, under our present law and constitution, can do this now. Their goal is to further encourage through the psychological effect of E.R.A. women to abandon their home. What about the children? They have the answer: put them in vast day care centers where they will get better training anyway. Well, this tune has been played before and is still popular in such areas as China, Russia and Cuba." On Tuesday, October 25, Ezra Taft Benson addressed the studentbody at Brigham Young University. He quoted President McKay in one of his conference addresses, "Efforts "Ef-forts are being made to deprive man of his free agency to steal from the individual his liberty we consider communism com-munism to be the greatest satanical threat to peace, prosperity and God's work among men that exists on the face of this earth. (C.R. 4-66, p. 109)." Isn't that what E.R.A. is. Communism. According to Norman Vincent Peale, "There was a time when the American people roared like lions for liberty; now they bleat like sheep for security." May I quote once more from this same address. Benson said, "I have talked face-to- Your Farmers Agent Can Insure Just About Anything face with these godless communist com-munist leaders. It may surprise sur-prise you to learn that I was host to Mr. Khruschev for a half day when he visited the United States. Not that I'm proud of it I opposed his coming then and I still feel it w as a mistake to welcome this atheistic murderer as a state visitor. But according to President Eisenhower, Khruschev had expressed a desire to learn something of American agriculture, and after seeing Russian agriculture I can understand why. As we talked face-to-face he indicated that my grandchildren grand-children would live under communism. After assuring him that I expected to do all in my power to assure that his and all other grandchildren will live under freedom, he arrogantly declared in substance, sub-stance, "You Americans are gullible. No, you won't accept Communism outright, but we'll keep feeding you small doses of Socialism until you'll finally wake up and find you already have Communism. We won't have to fight you. We'll so weaken your economy until you'll fall like overripe fruit into our hands." J. Edgar Hoover describes one of our so-called civil rights movement leaders of America today, a man who hired a Communist as a top level aid. McCarty Executive Secretary Utoh Education Association Swallow hard before you read this statistic: Two million children a year are so physically abused by their parents that these youngsters statistically qualify as being "battered." Here's another: Twenty million American children live with an alcoholic parent. And another: In Maryland alone. 6.000 parents went to court to give up responsibility for a teenaged child. Here in Utah, there is a law that makes it mandatory for us to report physical abuse of children to authorities. By "physical abuse," the law upresumably is not referring to a slap on the wrist by a mother who has just witnessed her son punch a hole in the wallboard with a baseball bat. Child abuse can be almost incredibly cruelty. We are told of children coming to school with cigarette burns, many of them, on their bodies. We also learn of youngsters with bones broken by parents.
