Show With Tom Griffiths- Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome wel-come to the greatest show on earth. Utah's three ring circus. cir-cus. We call your attention to the ring on your left. . The actors are among the most talented in the world. There is Gary Mark Gilmore, a most talented and unusual performer. He has spent 18 of his 35 years in prison for various crimes. The most recent being the slaying of two men. He is most unusual, he wants to die to pay for these vicious killings, yet recently he performed per-formed an unusual act. He took an overdose of drugs in an attempt to take his own life. But his planning was all wrong, he recovered. Keep your eyes on this ring, the act could be thrilling. We invite you to turn your attention to the center ring. Here you will see a group of performers that are unsurpassed unsur-passed in the entertainment world. Lawyers are particularly particu-larly in evidence. There are representatives of various groups who promulgate the advancement of crime. And, who is this that leads the parade? par-ade? It is the Governor of the State. His act is sensational. He says the death penatly is a tool of society, not the right of a condemned man. So he postponed post-poned the execution date. Now what is a tool of society? Mr. Gilmore was tried in a court of law and found guilty. Is this not a tool of society? To back up the tool of society, Gilmore confessed to the murders. Now I call your attention to the lawyers. They play an interesting in-teresting game called "twist the law." Before they are through playing this game, they will leave the impression that Gilmore is a hero and society is persecuting him. There is Mr. Boaz, his attorney. attor-ney. He is enjoying his part in this circus act. He recently appeared on the "Good Morning Morn-ing America" television show, and I am sure there was a little renumeration for this great service. He also called Johnny Cash to appeal for clemency for his client. There are other lawyers in this center circle all vying for attention. Some of them were fired by Gilmore, but they still insist on getting into the act. I call your attention to the ring on your right. I am sorry the light on this ring is not very good. In fact, you will have to look closely to see this act. It is one full of human emotions. There is a young woman large with child. By her side is her little son, the pride and joy of his father. But there is no father, he has been brutally murdered. Who is there that can fully describe this scene? Can you measure the tears and the sleepless nights wondering what the future will bring? Perhaps the Daughters of Wisdom Wis-dom from Litchfield, Conn., who referred to the murderer as a salvageable human being have an answer. Wait, do not leave the show yet, there is more heartache and sadness. There is another young wife and infant child. They were numbered among the good people of this world. The night before Max Jensen was shot, he and his wife spoke at their sacrament meeting. The world has been robbed of this fine man. And another young wife and child face a life of heartache. Some college professors arc-asking, arc-asking, "is capital punishment cruel and unusual punish-menf? punish-menf? In these enlightened, humanistic times should the state inflict it's punishment with Old Testament "Eye for an Eye" vengence? Indeed, enlightened, humanistic human-istic times? Too much education educa-tion has gone to the heads of these professors. Is it humanistic humani-stic when people living in big cities must put bars on their windows and double locks on their doors? That when darkness dark-ness comes, the women lock themselves in their homes and dare not venture out on the streets. Robberies, rapes and drug abuse are increasing at a tremendous rate, and social disease is now an epidemic. Utah has missed a golden opportunity to show the rest of the country and the world for that matter that we have leaders lead-ers with fortitude who are not afraid to show that criminals will be punished for their crimes. But, instead, they created a three ring circus and the disgust of the citizenship. .
