Show An American Fork basketball basket-ball team that applies constant pressure, which as the game goes on becomes a "pain" to opponents was shown last week. Against an Orem team that is being touted as one of the best two or three teams in the States 4A schools, AF "could have won" and against Lehi the pressure was more than they could bear. Orem with a tall club was glad when the final horn sounded as they were a tired outfit. The AF team pressed from start to finish and those who saw the game were all convinced that Orem was "lucky" to have won it. AF led 18-17 the first quarter with Frank Pulley and Mark Farnsworth setting the AF scoring pace with 12 points each. Brad Adamson ripped the nets for nine points during the second quarter as AF led 34-33, and the highlights of the periods per-iods were Coach Ingersoll get-ing get-ing with his first "T" of the year as Orem players were getting the benefit of any doubt on charging fouls. All of that changed "after" the technical tech-nical call and AF seemed to get a few "breaks". AF went a bit cold during the third period as they missed a passel of open shots and Orem led 44-48. The Cavemen were far from out of it and tied the game at 59 all. AF Missed three times on the one and one foul try shot at the line while Orem hit four straight teams from the charity stripe. The final score read Orem 64 and AF 61. It was a terrific effort by the AFers. AF kept pressure pres-sure on the Tigers the entire game and the "press" paid off as Orem had their hands full, believe me. Only clutch shooting shoot-ing and an AF turnover in the last 13 seconds could have turned this one around. Brad Adamson was brilliant again putting 21 points through the net and playing an excellent excel-lent floor game against a much taller Oremite. Frank Pulley with out doubt one of the hardest working Cavemen I have ever seen rang up 14. Backcourter Mark Farnsworth hit 13, Chris Monson a bundle of rebounds and a super defensive defen-sive job had 7, Scott Rackman Jay Vees Lose To Orem, Whip Lehi Coach Bob Eckles saw his JayVee team lead Orem all the way only to be caught at the regulation ending buzzer. In overtime the Tigers Jay-vees Jay-vees won by a 53-52 score. Missed opportunities cost AF this game as the Cavemen team had golden chances to salt it away but inexperience down the stretch hurt them. Quarter scores saw AF lead 15-11; 26-22; 42-34 regulation ended 49 all. The final 53-52 saw junior Jon Larsen setting the AF scoring pace with 13 points. At Lehi, AF led from gun to gun with scores by quarter with AF in front 17-12, 31-25, 49-39 and the final 63-50. Coach Eckles used all of his team members. Jamie Burgess and Steve Larsen looked sharp up front, while the twins, Bob and Ron Lewis set up many plays. Sophs Win Two Games Coach Art Allred got the AF sophomore basketball program off to a winning note as the sophs posted two wins last week over Cottonwood and Orem. Against Cottonwood AF came from behind a 29-27 half-time half-time Cottonwood lead with a big third quarter splurge to go out front 38-31. The AF defense held the Cottonwood team to just 2 points. The final score was AF 58, Cottonwood 43, with scoring going as following, Gary E. Beck 10, Steve Larsen 9, Russ Devitt game honors with 15, Gary D. Beck 6, Jeff Elliason 8, Scott Richardson 3, Scott Shumway 3, Ron Steinekirt, 3 andChris Warenski2. Against Orem another third quarter scoring effort propelled AF to a 59-46 win as Orem only got 5 points while AF hit 16 in the fatal third. Scoring went like this, Elder Beck 16, Steve Larsen 15, Devitt 3, David Beck 6, Elliason Ellia-son 7, Joel Richards 2, Steinekirt Steine-kirt 2, Mike Ovard 2, Frank Cadena 1, Todd Cooper 2, and Warenski 1. The sophs are idle for a few days but workouts continue and the two wins over class 4A schools makes the coming sea son look pretty good for the talented sophomores. had 2, Gary Elder Beck 2, Paul Peters in his first game action 2, and Bart Hawkins played but failed to score, and AF with Rackman and Mark doing a lot of the damage just plan ran the Tigers ragged and it was with relief that Joel Gardner gave a huge sigh when the final gun went off. Defeat Lehi At Lehi Saturday after the Cavemen took a quarter getting get-ting adjusted to the Pioneers zone defense it was "all over" as AF with all suited players in action won easily 79-54. The first stop saw AF in front by 14-13 but then Chris Monson rang up 10 points and with help from his teammates the second quarter showed AF 41, Lehi 25. The constant man-to-man pressing Cavemen defense was more than the Pioneers could handle. Early in the third quarter after AF had built a 59-31 score Coach Carl Ingersoll went to the bench and everyone got Trophies For Bowling Winners in the American Fork Women's Bowling Association Asso-ciation tournament were awarded trophies at the awards banquet held on Tuesday Tues-day evening, November 23, at the Kopper Kettle in American Fork. Weber appeared to be way too much for the Cavemen as Winners DeBolt, Tina Makin, Frances Watson, Joleen Walker and Susan Walker. Rm 44fi nvn ni John Roberts .-' ... they went out to an 11-4 lead, but the AF man to man pressing press-ing defense got AF a 19-18 first quarter ending score, and with Mark Farnsworth and Frank Pulley scoring well, AF at halftime had a 39-34 edge, and then came the Cavemen's trapping press during the third quarter and "it was all over." Behind two exceptionally speedy guards, Scott Rack-man Rack-man and Mark Farnsworth, who lead the trapping affair, and the seemingly uncanny ability of the front line to intercept in-tercept passes, AF made the Warriors commit several turnovers, tur-novers, while forward Brad Adamson from off the right of the key ripped the Warriors zone defense apart. Brad scored ten points in the period as AF put it away at 63-45 and Chris Monson had a lot of rebounds and intercepts during dur-ing the quarter as big Chris, in early foul trouble, set out a lot of the first half. Coach Carl Ingersoll used everyone suited during the final fin-al quarter, and with none of the first team in, the reserves kept the score mounting and AF came away with a convincing convinc-ing 82-62 victory. The Cavemen had four shooters in double figures and the top gun Brad Adamson again led the scoring, even on an off night, with 22 points. Frank Pulley, a solid performance, perfor-mance, had 15; Farnsworth, a whirling dervish, ended up with 14; Bart Hawkins, off the bench, had a fine game with 10, Rackman, the offense lead Batteries 10 Off on all batteries MC CULLOCH CHAIN SAW Mini Mac 35 $1 69.95 You can't buy another chain saw with all these features ai any price! - lien nuiv 0iiais Carrying Case (worth $20) Automatic oiling Chain Brake Safety zul Amtrican Fork, Utah 28 N 1st West. 756-4521 Cedar City. Russ is an outstanding prospect, not only in basketball, basket-ball, but baseball as a shortstop, short-stop, football as a quarterback, quarter-back, and all three coaches in those sports are expecting Russ to excel. He led the football foot-ball team to the region title this past fall. er, had 6; Chris Monson 4, Paul Peters 4, Bob Lewis 4, Gary D. Beck 2, and Jamie Burgess 2, with Vaughn Webster Web-ster and Gary E. Beck not suited for this one. The big win can only help the AF confidence and after that shaky start four games ago against Logan, this gang has come a long way and they are a team well worth watching watch-ing as they are executing the press as well at this stage as any team Ingersoll has had. This weekend they go against Clearfield out there and are home Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. against Lehi. In the preliminary JV game, AF blew a good lead and lost by 54-53 final, with Ron Lewis scoring 15, Steve Larsen 11, Jamie Burgess 10, Jon Larsen 9, Bob Lewis 6, and Gary D. Beck 2. Wrestlers To Open Season On December 3rd and 4th, the Cavemen wrestling team will travel south to Cedar City for a tournament there as the Afers get their season opened. Art Allred, head sophomore mentor, said, "Russ sets the offense, he is our floor leader, he keeps his 'cool,' and never seems to get rattled. He is very coachable and a good shooter." That is high praise for a sophomore, but Russ so far has earned the accolades and having watched him up through little league and the football season, it is very hard the league dual matches get underway on December 16th with AF at Payson for the opener. AF, under coach Tim Pon-tious, Pon-tious, appears to be fairly strong in weights under 175, but from there up to unlimited, coach Pontious has very inexperienced inex-perienced men wrestling. Jeff Ranck and Scott Boley, two returnees, along with others are expected to have big seasons and the development develop-ment of the heavier weight wrestlers will in the long run determine how AF will do as a team. He seems very composed on the outside at this stage of his sports career, Russ is 145 pounds, stands 5' 10" and is still growing. He is an excellent ball handler with good hands, and his Dad said "ever since he was a baby he has loved anything with a ball involved." His parents are Willard and Beth Ellison Devitt. Russ comes by his athletic ability naturally enough. He has always al-ways had to compete with his nephew Scott Rackman, a junior jun-ior on the Cavemen team, and his father was a very good athlete playing for BYU in both basketball and football. Dad also coached basketball at Moab High. Willard Added, "I'm pleased with his progress and development, develop-ment, and all of his life with Scott they have been competitive. competi-tive. Russ accepts a challenge, he has always been a leader and among the neighborhood kids. They look to Russ for leadership and I'm very proud of him as he accepts constructive construc-tive criticism." Brother Brent also played football for AF and brothers Michael who lives in Logan, and Clint an 8th grader who loves sports along with sisters Sharon Rackman, Kathleen Millward, Carol Thomas, Rebecca and Christine all support sup-port and root for Russ. A good student, Russ carries a 3.6 grade point average in studies, is a Priest, has been a member of the "Junior Patriots", a singing group, and is president of his seminary semin-ary class. He is active in scouting and has plans of serving serv-ing a mission in his future. His hobbies are all sports, skiing, golf and swimming. He has been active in tennis having hav-ing won the singles title while in junior high. Mom and Dad are both avid supporters of Russ and their grandson, Scott Rackman, and think it is great that both are on the Cavemen team. Scott has been a great example for Russ and both love the competitiveness compe-titiveness between them.
