Show About the Gathering Place !RS Tells How to Determine Exemptions For Dependents Do you realize how serious the drug problem is in American Fork? In Lehi? In Pleasant Grove? The statistics are shocking!!! shock-ing!!! It's a problem most citizens citi-zens know about but are at a loss as to know what to do about it. Even when it touches their own family. Recently I have discovered a most unusual program designed as a street level intervention for the treatment of drugs and drug related problems. This program goes further than this, however. It tries to reach all people (especially teen-agers) with problems and treat the cause of the problems. The . treatments consist of treating the five separate dimensions of the personality; social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual in-tellectual and physical. Treating Treat-ing each dimmension separately they succeed in treating the whole person, This new program is called The Utah County Council on Drug Abuse and Rehabilitation. It is a semi-private non-profit organization. The place where they meet is called "The Gathering Gath-ering Place". There are presently two such places in Utah County. The one in our area is located at 67 South Main in Pleasant Grove. The other one is in Provo at 193 East 100 North. Bob Turner of Pleasant Grove is the director of this program in our area He has a masters degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from the Utah State University at Logan, was a Head Start Director and counselor counse-lor from 1969 to 1973 and is well qualified to carry on this program. Mr. Turner is married and has seven children. Working closely under Mr. Turner are two dedicated paraprofessional counselors, Russ Henrie of Pleasant Plea-sant Grove and Cheryl Rawson of Orem. Both Russ and Cheryl are in their early 20's and have had several years of experience in rehabilitation work. Russ is married and has one young son. At the present he is working for his degree in psychology at the BYU. Cheryl is single and has a degree in Social Psychology from the University of California Califor-nia at Santa Barbara. The Gathering Place program consists of personal counseling, group tiierapy, analysis and all sorts of activities. They also work with the other social agencies agen-cies in the state obtaining jobs, homes and giving any special help their people need. The Gathering Place is open between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. The telephone number is 785-4948. There is also a 24 hour "Crisis" line for anyone an-yone who needs help with any problem and cannot reach the Pleasant Grove number, it is 377-4300. All information gi" i to them is strictly confidentia Each evening at the Gathering Gather-ing Place is taken up by some activity such as basketball, living liv-ing skills training, dinners and outdoor activities. Thursday evening is open to anyone in the community who just wants to come in and talk. The success of this program will depend largely on those in the community sharing their time and talents to help. There will be a volunteer training program for any young people or adults interested in helping with this program on a volunteer basis. It will start Saturday, Feb. 22 and run from 10:00 a.m. until noon at the Gathering Place in Pleasant Grove. By learning to deal with drug problems citizens can Coral Theater American Fork Sunday ONLY March 9 LURE OF THE NORTH A TRUE ADVENTURE OF THE ALASKA HIGHWAY Produced by Marvin Eppes Carl Waggoner Harold Parker 5-7 and 9 p.m. Children 75' Adults $1.75 By Peggy Shoell' learn to deal with many social problems. Not only volunteers are needed need-ed but donations of furniture, curtains, games or anything you think they could use in their place and program. More funds are needed also. The program has been well supported, sup-ported, so far, by the city councils coun-cils and civic leaders of our area. They are funded by the Federal Government, state and local donations. Now they would like to take on a larger full fledged prevention and education educa-tion program and add an in-residence in-residence center. They feel that prevention is even more important impor-tant than treating those who already have a drug problem. The Gathering Place welcomes wel-comes the chance to explain their program personally to an- The Internal Revenue Service recently outlined rules on who may claim an additional tax exemption when more than one person supports a dependent. Although several persons may share in paying for the support of a dependent, federal law permits per-mits only one qualified taxpayer to claim the extra exemption for that dependent, Roland V. Wise, yone or as a presentation for club and church groups. Anyone interested in contacting them may do so by calling 785-4948. All funds donated are used entirely en-tirely in our area for this program. In my opinion, this is a very needed and worthy cause. Too many young people lose their way with the pressures and temptations of these modern days. ! congratulate "The Gathering Gath-ering Place" and the workers there who spend the time and effort to help these people get their lives straightened out and put together again. Moreover, each member of the group must meet all requirements for claiming the exemption himself or herself. Also, the person claiming the .exemption must provide at least 10 per cent of the dependent's support. "The taxpayers can decide among themselves who will claim the tax exemption," Mr. Wise said. "The others must then fill out a special declaration - Form 2120; 'Multiple Support Declaration' Declara-tion' - stating that they will not claim the exemption. The person per-son claiming the exemption must file these forms with his or her return," he said. Mr. Wise added that IRS Publication Pub-lication 501, "Your Exemptions and Exemptions for Depen dents," has more information on multiple support arrangements arrange-ments and is available free from IRS offices. The order blank in the Form 1040 package can be used to get copies of Form 2120 and Publication 501 conveniently by mail.
