Show BROWSING With Tom Griffiths- I saw a robin this morning, he looked sleek and fat, but I knew it was his heavy winter feathers that puffed him out. If only those pesky starlings would go away I would feed him. I did give him a silent greeting and thanked him for being a harbinger har-binger of spring. As I contemplate contem-plate the coming of spring, I think back, Oh, so many years Cradle News February 11 -Girl to John and Sharma Swenson Winters of Lehi. From where I lived on the hillside, I could see and hear the brook in the valley. In spring it sang a different song. A full throated song as it ran bank full to the reservoir. When summer came, it would sing a different song, a quiet lullaby to the trees and sky. I would climb to the top of the mountain and sit in the heather and listen. When it came. I knew that spring had arrived. It was the plaintive call of the cuckoo. It was now that Mam (which is Welsh for mother) would say "come bachgen," (which is Welsh for boy) it is time to make the ointment and we must collect the buds before they break into leaf." So with her shawl about her shoulders, we would search out the elder trees and fill a bag with big, fat buds. Mam would then boil the buds and add several mysterious ingredients that when cool became a green ointment. There was no doubt about it's healing power. It cured everyth-. everyth-. ing from lacerations to nettle rash. Mam also made an embrocation embro-cation that she used to rub on our chests for colds and body aches. Apparently the ointment and tinbrocation worked for me because I didn't see the inside of a doctor's office until I was a young man. Spring in Wales was cold and damp and we kids wore no underwear, un-derwear, but to compensate for this, Mam made our shirts out of warm Welsh flannel and made the shirt tails extra long so we'd wrap them around our posteriors to keep us warm. But there came a spring when Mam was not with us anymore and I have wondered many times whatever became of her recipes for the ointment and embrocation. It is said that springtime is the time of romance. That a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of what his girl friend has been thinking about all winter. I realize my age is showing, but I try. For example, on Valentine's Day I bought my wife a bottle of perfume called "My Sin." It's strange, but my wife didn't question my motive. That's when you must acknowledge acknow-ledge that you are getting old. I think of an acquaintance of mine who has an eye for the pretty girls. He confided in me that at his marriage ceremony he promised faithfully to abide by all the laws and requirements require-ments of the wedding vows. But during the ceremony, he kept his one eye closed. This was the one he exempted from the wedding wed-ding vows and reserved for looking look-ing at pretty girls. Then there was the case of my father. Mom had been gone for a few years and we knew that he was lonesome. Then one Saturday afternoon he dressed up in his Sunday suit and even wore a flower in his lapel. His gray mustache was trimmed and his hair was neatly cut and anointed with some sweet smelling smell-ing pomade. The only explanation explana-tion he gave us was that he was going to a neighboring town for a visit. But each Saturday afternoon after-noon for several months, he repeated this perlormance until he broke the news to us that he was going to marry again. Oh. you women. God made you different from we men and he had a reason in mind. Sometimes Some-times in a kiss, or even a glance, you can start vibrating the chords of music in a man's heart. You can stir his thoughts until he thinks he is a king Now, my love's, don't ever let such things as women's liberation, libera-tion, or equal rights amendments amend-ments ever change you. With the coming of spring, we want you in our hearts now in our way Think hack to those earliest of (lavs when the (iralm asked, "is ;t good tor man (o he alone'.'" And the answer came ha i k loud and dear, "il is not good for man to be alone." and Fve as created from a part of man. So, regardless of what some gall minded women may say, AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN THURSDAY. FEBRUARY27, 1975 you are part of we men even as spring is a part of the year.
