Csveza Pull Upset; fence ProYO Bulldogs American Fork's rousing Cavemen trounced the Provo Bulldogs by a 21 to 6 final score in last week's league opener for one of two tremendous upsets in the league. American Fork healthy and full of fight eleven took the opening kickoff and before the fans were hardly seated Brad Deveraux, the Forkers quarterback, had the Cavemen on the scoreboard. The march went from the A.F. 36 yard line to pay dirt in 14 plays as the Cavemen were moving the larger physical Provo line. The clincherwas atwoyard-er atwoyard-er from Deveraux to Steve HaT-sey, HaT-sey, a little look in pass that was bread and bul'.er allday bug for A.F. They key play in the drive was i short eight yard pass fromDev to Clark Fox A.F. fullback for i first down on the Provo 28 when it lcoked like the drive had stalled. Provo, unable to move the ball for any sizable gains kicked, and once more Deveraux guided ths Cavemen to a touchdown. The drive started on the Forkers own 12, Fox pounded the line for two hard yards, then Dev passed to Steve Hallsey open on the A.F. 38, Steve made a stumbling catch of the ball, then set his sails and outran the Provo secondary for a 86 yard scoring bomb. During this process however, the big Provo line was taking their toll of A.F. players with several Cavemen hurting, Deveraux included. in-cluded. Also injired l this early going was Mick Rogers, swift A.F. tailback, several A.F. linemen line-men were limping badly. In the second period the Cavemen Cave-men with Mark Merekley at the controls headed goalward again to the greatest delight of the packed house. Mark, on the Provo 33 flipped that short little look in pass to Hallsey and the big end caught the ball of the 30 yard line and Jusl bowled over tackles to race into the end zone all alone. Steve must have broken at least five tackles as he just would not go down. Kirk McDaniel, talented Caveman Cave-man kicker, then booted his third point after to end the A.F. scoring scor-ing for the day. But the Cavemen had completed their job. Provo then took the opening kickoff of the third period in for a t.d. Jeryl Smith of Pi jvo fielded field-ed McDaniels kick on '.he Provo 5 and Smith broke down the sidelines side-lines with a spectacular run. Th.it was Provo' s on1. good show of the game as the Cavemen just would not let them in'o scoring range. Heros were many for the stouthearted stout-hearted Cavemen with the line of Harold Wimmer, Lee Alh'n, Craig McDaniel, Mark Hadlock, Dave Hamilton, John Brown, Randy Spafford, Ray CodJington, Louis Strasburg, and many others as they just dag in'o the b'geer Provo team and would not slow up. Hard working Davis Knight assistant A.F. coach deserves lots of credit for the Cavemei line play. Deveraux was simply superb as he drilled the 3Jl'.dcys with seven straight passes in thai firs' drive and for an over all game completion of an amazing nine for eleven and v; .hey say, yoa just don't find better than tha. Merkley did yeoman work filling fill-ing in for Deve-aux, his kickoff returns, his pass defense, he killed one Provo drive with a key interception, and I'm just glad he is on our side. Dennis Gauger, Clark Fox, Dean Rassmussen, Mick Rogers, Dennis Parker and the other Forker runners worked very hard ai'! learned a lot from this contest. con-test. A.F, Just might iiave the best tandem of ends that ever performed per-formed on the Cavemen turf in Hallsey and Beck. Eoth are exceptionally ex-ceptionally big, both are very fast, both know how to catch the ball, and best of all both know where the goalline Is and that i 4T a I 4 Is where they head for after catching the ball. It was a great team vbiory for the Cavemen and especially their newest member head coach Tom Crittenden. Tom, I know just could not believe that a high school game could go on for so long a time. That las: quarter for Tom lasted about three days, believe me he was sweating out every second, but he won his first game and you can bet that many more victories will come. None will taste as sweet as his first one. Tomorrow Tom has his work cut out for him as he tackles his big brother Jim. Head coach of the Lehl Pioneers, -both Tom and 'Jim won'y a lot on the sidelines side-lines and tor added interest at the game, watch them and see for yourself who works the hardest. Jim with one returning regular, and three lettermen is bringing a Lehi team that is short on experience, but one that stings when they hit the town. Lehi will go with two quarterbacks quarter-backs in Jon Barnes and Kim Cooper, big linemen in Scott Chivers, Ted Peck and Chris Wengren. Backs Terry Kirk- PREPARING FOR SATURDAY'S OPENING KICK-OFF of Little League Football action are, 1. to r., Owen Dean, Colt coach; Larry Searle, coach of the Bears; Evan Durfey, assistant coach of the Browns (Jim Cunningham, Brown's head coach was absent when the picture was taken); and William Pierce, vice president of the Utah Valley Conference. Little League Football to Get Underway Saturday The Utah Valley football conference con-ference is all set for Saturday's big opening round of football games. This year has seen the expansion expan-sion of the league to include a new team from Jordan, along with the three American Fork, two Lehi and two Pleasant Grove teams. The league is now expected expect-ed to be much better in ability and it goes without saying, more exciting. Am. Fork will enter the Browns defending champions. The Browns coached byJimCun-ningham byJimCun-ningham will take on the P. G. Steelers at 11:30 a.m. in defense of the crown. In the curtain raiser at 9:00 a.m. the Lehi Packers, always a strong contender, will entertain the P. G. Eagles to start the league off. Stan Smith coaches the Packers. American Fork's Bears will test the Lehi Giants at 1 "hll a.m. In the second scheduled game. Larry Searle coaches the Browns and Ken Norris heads the Giants. In the final game Owen Dean, new Colt coach for A. F will try to handle the new Jordan team. Incidently, Ken Jordan Is the Jordan coach. All games throughout the season sea-son wi'l be played at the American Ameri-can Fork Cit;' Park. The league presidency with the new schedule has taken a forward for-ward move by scheduling twc mid-week games, that will see the league schedule completed before the deer season. Play in the past has run into unsettled winter -1 i - ham and Kerry Welch, scatback Eric Eddington will bear watching. watch-ing. Lehi led the Spanish Fork Dons going Into the last period and Spanish is loaded, so a very hard hitting game awaits the fans Friday at 3 p.m. Cn paper A. F. will be the favorite, but when these old rivals ri-vals meet you throw awiy the papr. Other league results saw what must rate as the biggest upset In high school sports as the Springville Red Devils outlasted the Orem Tigers 29 to 14. For the Golden Tigers tills was their first league loss going back to 1964 when Lehi turned the trick. Orem with 42 straight victories figured to waltz through the league lea-gue again but Springville, a city not known for their football prowess, prow-ess, and only 25 players on the team wrecked the Tigers string. The loss really opens the gate for what could very well be one of the most thrilling leagues ever In Region Four. Carbon won over PI. Grove 19-6. Payson bombed Uintah 34-6. 34-6. Stanish Fork over Lehi 25-7. Paysnn leads Class A schools, while Spanish, Springville, Carbon Car-bon and A.F. head class AA. weather. This year's las; game is set for October 11, and between be-tween now and then a lot o! football foot-ball will have been played. Fork and Lehi Sophomore teams. The contest will be played on the Lehi High School field starting start-ing about 3:30. Both schools, as the saying goes, are loaded. Lehi sophs have for the most part come up thru the Little League program as have the young Cavemen team and they will not be strangers to one another. Lehi' a coach, Bussie Manning and Don Mower, A.F. coach, are also not strangers with both men knowing the opposing teams very well. Both Mower and Manning Man-ning having worked with these same young men during their playing days in little kague. Manning and Mower both predict pre-dict victory over the other and Lehl with the running of backs Scott Half ield and Weston Innes, and A.F. with quarterback Steve Dean and end Billy Allen should provide Tans with an example of things to come in the not to distant dis-tant future when these same boys will play varsity ball. Steve Hsilsey Player of Week American Fork's premier end, senior Steve Hallsey, and I'll bet no one is surprised, has been selected by the coaching staff at AFHS as the outstanding Caveman Cave-man in Am. Hehas the sure hands of a top-flight end and the strong thighs of a running back which makes him a tough customer custo-mer to bring down. During the Provo contest he was outstanding from the A. F. side but he must have been a pain in the neck for coach Dick Hill and the Bulldog team. Against the Bulldogs he caught five passes good for thre touchdowns touch-downs and a total gain of one hundred sixty-three yards, proving prov-ing that once he latches on to the Pigskin he knows what to do with it and he does it very well.
