THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1969 Do AMERICAN FORK LION'S CLUB SPONSORS "BIG JIM" NELSON AT STATE CONVENTION--Local Lion's and their partners left this morning for state convention at St. George, where they will be staging an aggressive campaign for the candidacy of James B. Nelson for District Governor. Colorful boleros and white cowboy hats are trademark of American Fork Lions at convention. Lions Club Prepares To Roar it Slste Convention Members oftheAmericanFork Lion's Club will be "roaring" at the Utah State Lion's Club convention this weekend, as 22 couples travel to St. George for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday Sat-urday events. "Big Jim" Nelson Is sponsored sponsor-ed by the local club as the Dis trict Governor of 28-A and the club will be backing him 100 percent as each member and partner dons colorful re dbol- ero's and white straw hats to promote their candidate. The group will participate in the demonstration for District Governor on Friday, with the .American Fork contingent sponsoring spon-soring a combo led by Dick Tolton, son of members Clark and Jean Tolton. . Approximately 1,000 Lions and Ladles from Utah will be on hand to attend the convention. Children's Literature Authority Addresses Las Carinas Club Mrs. DeFonda Collier, well- known authority of children's lit erature was the guest speaker at the Las Carinas Club the even lng of April 10, at the home of Mrs. Susan Hunt. Mrs. Collier talked about how she became uv terested in children's books and passed out guide lists of ex cellent books for members to use while choosing books for their children. . Mrs. Collier stated that the purpose of children's literature should be to awaken, enlighten, and enlarge - not to Inform, improve or instruct. She said that childhood is now and real and important and that nothing but the best, (spiritually, culturally, and intellectually) should be chosen In connection with children's child-ren's literature. Since the Las Carinas Club year will soon be drawing to a close elections were held and other matters of business were discussed. It was decided that the vice president would automatically auto-matically step up to the position posi-tion of president for the following follow-ing year. The results of the elections elec-tions are as follows: Mrs. Stanford Stan-ford (Carolyn) Reid, president; Mrs. Ted (Sherry) Adamson, vice president; Mrs. Kenneth (Janice) Crookston, secretary. Eleven members and three guests were present this evening even-ing and Mrs. Carolyn Reid assisted as-sisted as co-hostess. Utah Motorists To Face Hew Traffic Laws "Utah motorists will be facing new traffic laws, enacted by the 1969 Legislature, on May 13," Alvin J. Thuli, President of the Utah Safety Council stated recently. re-cently. "One measure which drivers must adhere to," he stated, "is that of reporting traffic accidents. acci-dents. "With the new law. he said, "it is now required that all accidents resulting in Injury to or death of any person or total property damage to the apparent extent of $100 or more shall be reported within five days of the occurrence." The law further provides that in the case where insufficient information has been submitted to the Department of Public Safety, supplemental reports can be required. re-quired. Too, it also provides that reports can be requested of wit nesses to traffic mishaps in order or-der that complete and accurate data can be secured. "Another measure which goes into effect on May 13,"Thuli said, "is one which could lessen the number of stolen motor vehicles ve-hicles in Utah. ::As of that date," he stated, "it shall be unlawful to leave a motor vehicle unattended unattend-ed wtth the motor running. Too, the car owner is required to lock the ignition, remove the key and either set the emergency brake or to place thevehicle'sgears into park. When parking on any perceptible grade, they are required re-quired tc turn the front wheels toward the curb or side of the highway." Mrs, Thelma Faddis, American Amer-ican Fork recently returnedhome after a three week trip to the Eastern United States with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Kay (Beth) Allred of Mont-pelier, Mont-pelier, Idaho. Main purpose of the trip was to attend the 17th annual Republican Women's Conference in Washington, Washing-ton, D. C. April 14 through the 17th. Mrs. Faddis reports that they met President and Mrs. Richard Nixon and Vice President and Mrs. Spiro Agnew and were conducted con-ducted on a personal tour of the White House. They visited all the points of interest in Washington, D. C. and then enroute home went to Palmyra and Niagra Falls, New York and up into Canada.
