Annual Timpanogos Hike largest larg-est community climb in America, Amer-ica, has been set this year for August 2 and 3, it was announced by Dr. Israel Heaton, who again will chairman the event. Usually in previous years the event has been scheduled bet ween the terms of Brigham Young University Summer School, about July 14-20, but for several years it has been delayed because of heavy snow pack on the trail. The activities begin with a program Friday evening starting start-ing at 8 p.m. in Aspen Grove, 17 miles up Provo Canyon. BYU Summer School studentbody officers of-ficers will prepare the program. Traditionally the legend of Timpanogos is portrayed in dance and drama. The myth is about "Red Eagle" and "Utahna" the young Indian maiden who was sacrificed on the rugged mountain. The originator orig-inator of the legend was the late Eugene L. Roberts, who started the mass trek up the mountain in 1912. Dr. Roberts' legend ends with the hearts of the dead lovers merging into the great Heart of Timpanogos, an actual heartshaped stalactite in Timpanogos Cave. Officials expect 4,000 hikers, and past experience Indicates that 2,500 of those will reach the summit. Summit badges will be given to those who reach the top by the Provo Chamber of Commerce. A shelter at Emerald Lake makes an excellent resting place before making the effort to climb t h e final 2,000 feet beyond tim-berline tim-berline to the summit. Hikers climbing the mountain will receive the rewarding view of Utah Valley and part of Juab County and South Salt Lake City. After reaching the top, hikers will receive the thrill of sliding down the several hundred yards of glacier. Hikers are warned against cutting the trail because of the danger of rolling rocks injuring those below. Radio operators and first aid men will be stationed sta-tioned along the trail for any emergency help.
