He stated that to date 218 have lost their lives on Utah highways. Three hundred twenty-seven died in 1966. We have become too complacent and regard these as just statistics until it happens to us or one of our loved ones. There are 15,000 injured in Utah each year at a cost of 60 million mil-lion dollars, or $60 per person in the state. Nationally thare are 50,000 killed, 4 12 million injured at an economic cost to the public of nine billion dollars. The cost in suffering, lonesome-ness, lonesome-ness, and loss of loved ones cannot can-not be evaluated. Each of the 327 statistical numbers was once a real live person, enjoyed life, family, friends, and the void cannot can-not be filled. Thirteen per cent of the 15,000 injured are permanent or temporary disabled blinded, loss of memory permanent or temporary. Some become helpless help-less invalids, some human vegetables; veg-etables; sons, daughter, mothers, moth-ers, fathers. The impact doesn't always reach us till it comes close to home, and it happened 327 times, in Utah last year. What can we do? OBEY THE LAWS Thankful we have a heritage of laws in our country. Rules of the road are the best mankind can devise and have survived the test of time. EDUCATION Make people award of the laws. ENGINEERING Improved roads and equipment. Education must be backed up by discipline. Discipline through law enforcement, which is mis understood, misused and abused many times. Increased enforce ment cuts down on accidents in direct proportion to the amount of enforcement. Our law enforcement can be only as good as we pay for. We are not concerned enough. Trooper Charles Warren showed a film "Space Driving," depicting the need for proper space between vehicles at varying speeds to prevent rear end collisions. col-lisions. Accidents are happening at the rate of 1800 per hour, 43,200 per day. Speed, fatigue, space (following too closely), drunken driving, disobeying laws are most frequent causes of accidents. ac-cidents. Space is the cheapest insurance a driver can buy--it costs you nothing. Enforcement pays off. Mrs. Allen reminded the members mem-bers to be active in the coming primaries, registration and voting vot-ing on November 7. Fires killed 12,100 people in America last year, over half of them in their own homes. Fires destroyed over 1.86 billion bil-lion dollars worth of property in the same period. The great tragedy of these statistics sta-tistics Fire Chief Anderson points out, is that most of this waste in lives and property is avoidable. The record could be far different if everyone would assume personal responsibility for observing the Fire Rules of Safety at home and on the job. Preventing fires is everybodys job. Don't give fire a place to start. Don't smoke in bed. Don't keep matches in the reach of children. Don't store gasoline in glass containers. Don't allow rubbish to be near heating units in attics, basements or garages. Don't overload electrical outlets.
