Show if...,. - " -"Tr?'-' """"""" - This new center line stripe is a fresh approach to driver visual accommodation. It is presently being used on the newly opened section of Interstate 15, from Sixth South to 33rd South. Because of the tremendous safety feature involved, it may be adopted throughout the state. . . ' i ' . Unique Innovation on Utah's Interstate r The Jtah State Highway Department De-partment has conceived and put into use a novel and unique method of separating the lanes of traffic traf-fic on concrete surfaced highway? high-way? by painting . solid nine inch black line and superimposing a six inch white skip upon it. The new center lines are now being used on the Sixth South to 33rd South section of Interstate 15 In Salt Lake City. The effort of the white skip lines on solid black has a tremendous safety feature involved as it gives the feeling of small retaining walls, yet it doesn't have a mesmerizing mesmeriz-ing impact upon the driver. Traffic Traf-fic .flow tends to stay in the designated des-ignated lanes without wandering from lane to lane. The previous method of painting paint-ing white skip lines on concrete has produced a maintenance problem as they do not show up well on the light surface of concrete con-crete and require frequent painting. paint-ing. During inclement weather such as fog, rain, and snow, the standard white skip lines are barely visible. Some states have tried to combat com-bat the problem of center lines on concrete paving by painting alternating black and white lines. Studies have shown that this method produces eye discomfort and has not been the solution, The new method of painting center lines, that the Utah Highway High-way Department has produced does not have the effect of eye discomfort. Jim West, Chief Maintenance Engineer, Utah State Depattmentof Highways, conceived con-ceived the idea and after discussion discus-sion with the United States Bureau Bur-eau of Public Roads the method war. researched and tested. One cheif problem was to find a black paint compatible with concrete and a white paint that was compatible com-patible to the black. After numerous num-erous tests, paints were developed de-veloped that met the standards of compatibility and traffic wear. According to the Utah State Highway Director, Henry C. Hel-land, Hel-land, Utah is one of the first states to conceive of or try this new method of separating lanes of traffic and the Utah Highway Department is already receiving inquiries from other states as to the specification., of the paint and the method of applying it. . Many areas of the state are planning on adopting this new stripping method and there is . a possibility that it could become be-come a permanent feature of the concrete surfaced highway in Utah. This is just one of the many ; new and outstanding methods that , the Utah Highway Department has engineered to make travel within ; this state safe, pleasant and unique. l&Sk be with Certainly I will thee.
