Show THE AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN, Thursday, March 9, 1961 Eastmonds Report on Buenos Aires and Chilean Lakes Dear Frank, , ' We had a thrilling week In Buenos Aires, the largest city in the southern hemisphere. We had two arranged tour . so we covered the whole city pretty pret-ty wen. They have very large parks and a fabulous zoo. Will's favorite pastime Is a aoo. A great variety of restaurants. restau-rants. Large colonies of German, Ger-man, Swiss and Italians are here and each group has a famous fa-mous restaurant. We've tried three of them so far. The German and Swiss Ice Follies were on so we saw them both. : They are much better 4ha the FoUle we have at home. They had a trained chimpanzee that could skate better than I can, and I'm not bad. Their oeaches are along the Elver jPata. The river Is thirty miles wide here and is a dirty muddy river but these people wen swimming in. 1W . The most striking thing about this city is that there are4 no Nesros here. None. X dont know what there secret Is but wouldn't would-n't California like to find It out. , 1 - We Jlew from puenos Aire? to Bariloche, the center of the Argentina, Chilean lake district. dist-rict. Boy, It was a long flight. Seven and a half hours In a rough little DC-3. Clare and Uncle Will both got - air .sick Clare was very unhappy about having to use the paper sack op the back of the1 plane seat, but what had to be had to be. I believe the lakes here in the Andes Mountains are the most beautiful in all. the world, I've seen many Lake Louise, Canada, Can-ada, Lake Oeneva, Switzerland, Lake Como, , Italy and many, many more, but these are1 breath taking. Here the water Is the bluest Blue you could ever see, the ; snow , capped mountains are so near and the bright green., foliage seems so crisp and healthy. . The government has neipea the hotels so the f od is the best we have had on our entire trip and our rooms ere .especially nice. Oreat plots of flower have been planted right down to the lake's edge. One hotel has an eighteen hole golf course along the1 lake shore. We hate to leave this area but then how can we get home If we dont begin heading north. We crossed southern Chile bv flteamer and motor coach. . f . . . . 4 : i ji - This is the area inac was oev . LI EH! We had a flood experience yesterday. yes-terday. We were roiling merrily along when a couple of soldiers stopped us and got In the bus with us. We wondered what was ua . but couldn't understand Spanish. It had been raining steadily and about a mile far-there far-there on along the road,' the stream had become a small river, ri-ver, and where it crossed the road it had cut under the one end of the bridge. The army boys wouldn't let us cross. I'm glad because while we were watching, . one of the . bridge timbers dropped into the stream. Well .we backed up for half a mile before our driver could get turned around and we went back to the little vll lagf and phoned ahead to Puerto Varas, our destination. Seemingly in about two hours a bus was headed In our direc tion for Bariloche. We waited for three hours and then went back to the washed out bridge, it was completely destroyed. The other bus came and) all the passengers and luggage was transferred across some planks the isoldles had put Into place1. All in a day's journey. We aw a tragedy. A village of about twenty homes had been completely - ruined by the" flood the week before. Every house was completely covered with mud and . rocks up to the middle of their windows, about to the center of their doors. I dont know how they .can do anything , about this. Their fence posts stick , up. about si foot Their gardens and cor als are under four feet of rock and mud." Along the road a little fur ther was their , church on high er ground ana arouna it are pitched a couple of dozen small white tents. The whole com m unity is - living- there. Sometime ! feel pretty darn lucky to live In our -nice part of the .world, among .people-jou . like and can understand. Where youcan eat good clean food and drink all the cold water you want to without wondering whether it's going to make you side or not. Tomorrow we fly to canti- ago and valpariso, ChilL I will write to you again from Lima, Peru. - As ever, Frank S. Thank goodness this trip is on a larger plane, a DC-8. The1 price they get for autos down here .would knock you dizzy. A new Chevy, is worth $8,000 American dollars. Ken's new Cadillac here sells for $15,- 139.
