Utah Safety Council Issues ..Suggestions " For Swimmers to Follow Utah Safety Council Issued a number of suggestions for swimmers swim-mers to follow during the summer sum-mer months. Since National Safety Council figures show that half of all drownings occur during June, July and August, the Utah Council Coun-cil stressed that it Is important to be careful in the water m order to cut down the high toll of lives taken in the summer. First, learn to swim well. The council points out that self-taught self-taught paddlers often think they are swimmers and over-estimate their abilities. Another important safety rule Is never to swim alone and never swim after' 'dark. Always swim with someone else near at hand who knows how to swim well. And experts say it Is difficult for even trained lifeguards to assist you In the dark. ' Third, be careful where you dive. Submerged rocks or other objects could knock you out. . Another rule is never Jokingly call for help, and never be a practical Joker in the water, especially with those who are timid. Such pranks cause many accidents, and dont make you any more popular. The council says that even strong swimmers are subject to cramps and bad guesses on their endurance. It suggests that if you want to swim far, someone should follow you in a boat. And speaking of boats, It is dangerous to overload your boat with either passengers or equipment. equip-ment. A good suggestion Is to watch the weather for sudden changes. Children's beach balls and inflated in-flated animals and rafts are sometimes blown a little ways out of reach.- In trying to regain re-gain it, children, and sometimes some-times adults . . . swim out beyond their limits. Irrigation ditches and canals are particular hazards to small children in Utah. Dont let children play near them, and keep a constant eye on youngsters young-sters if ditches and canals are In the vicinity.- Don't go swimming in cold water if you are overheated. Remember half of all drownings drown-ings occur during the summer. Follow these simple rules and prevent misfortunes.
