Profits from the liquor control commission, fishing and hunting licenses, fees received at colleges or other public institutions, institu-tions, retirement contributions and the like also total large amounts. The tax commission's collections are about 'one-half the total true revenue reaching the state treasury. University Funds The unrestricted revenue to the general fund mentioned above is allocated by the legislature legis-lature to many functions of state government. The junior and senior colleges and university de pend heavily , on appropriations from the general fund, which are supplemented by students' fees and aid from the federal government govern-ment and other sources. The courts, most of the state elective elec-tive offices, the tax commission, state institutions outside of those administered by the department de-partment of education and the department of public welfare the departments of health, agri culture, the state engineer' and the department of business reg ulation are all maintained in whole or in part by biennial appropriations from the "state general fund. Road Hog - The largest share of the tax commission's collections, $10 million, goes to road construe tion and maintenance. The counties and municipalities di rect the expenditure of $2.4 mill ion of this amount, representing the collections for the motor ve hide registration fund. The re mainder, the gasoline and .use fuel taxes, go to the state de partment of engineering, for road and aeronautics, and to the highway patrol.
