Show Citizen - Wednesday, October 7, 1992 Page 11 Cavemen By DEAN VON MEMMOTT It won't be until next year that the Aperfean Fork Cavemen will hare i ctiiance to win their Home-cominggame. Home-cominggame. LastThureday night, ' Homecoming was marred by a 10-0 loaa to the Provo Bulldogs. The Cavemen suffered through a dismal offensive effort, failing to mount a single successful offensive drive. That was a surprise because - the American Fork offense has been very effective in previous outings. The Caveman defense, on the other hand, played a great game, thwarting several Bulldog drives and, with one notable exception, keeping Provo out of the endzone. But the Cavemen will have to get the offense back on track this Friday, whey they plan Mountain View in the Bruin Bowl, if they hope to stay in the race for a berth in the state tournament. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard during their first drive of the game. On a second-down play, running back Cornell Saluone raced 72 yards from scrimage for a touchdown at 11:06. Nate Lundquist kicked a PAT. From their 28-yard line, the Cavemen attempted to get deep into Bulldog territory. But after they reached the Provo 46 on a Jared Ostler carry, their drive ended with Bulldog Ted Barley's sacking quarterback Colby Knightforafour-yard Knightforafour-yard loss. The Cavemen's defense went right to work to get the ball back as quickly as possible. This forced Provo to punt. But upon catching the ball, punt receiver Andy Epperson fumbled it. Provo's John Sorensen recovered recov-ered it on the Bulldog 35. The Cave Anthony kicked in that goal from inside the penalty box. Teammate Mandy Hodges chipped in the second sec-ond goal. Late in the period, Shauna Rohbuck stole the ball and passed it to Anthony for the third goal. The next half saw Anthony pass to Rohbuck for the fourth and final Bruin goal. On Friday, the Cavewomen needed a win tomaintain their hold on third place in the league. To achieve that needed victory, they had to push aside Provo. To stop her players, Cavewoman Coach Shauna Kay said, "Provo mostly hung back and played defensive de-fensive traps. They used offside traps. Provo capitalized on the next American Fork turnover, though. After getting sacked by Provo's Lincoln Lin-coln Tejada for a seven-yard loss in the early second period, Caveman quarterback Bryce Higbee threw traps, because there's always the chance that the linesman won't see an offensive player being drawn offsides while a goal is being made. I always like to play against people who play offsides traps, because I have very speedy forwards." Annie Broadbent and Mia Zimmerman led Provo's offensive efforts. But despite invading American Ameri-can Fork's end of the field many times, the Bulldogs took only one shot at the goal. ' Two Saluone runs and a American Ameri-can Forklatehitmoved Provoclear to the 5-yard line. On a third play, the Bulldogs got called for holding. The Cavemen refused the penalty to bring up fourth down. That refusal re-fusal turned out to be a mistake. On the next play, Lundquist kicked a 22-yard field goal. Thatended scoringfor thegame. The Cavemen continued having trouble in moving the ball. Their best drive occurred in the last two minutes of the half. DeMille and Bryan Durfey each caught 10-yard passes from Higbee, putting American Ameri-can Fork in midfield position. The drive stalled after Tajeda sacked Higbee for a seven-yard loss. The next period, the Bulldogs almost scored a touchdown. Midway Mid-way through the quarter, Tyler Jackson's catch of 10-yard pass inside in-side Caveman territory enabled the Bulldogs to march clear into the 10. But the tough Caveman defenders defend-ers stopped Saluone at the four during a fourth-down play. An offsides call against Provo gave the Caveman offense hope of getting out of the hole. But despite a 27-yard run by Jared Ostler, the Cavemen couldn't move the ball across the 50-yard line. In the fourth period, Epperson The Cavewomen, on the other hand, shot at the goal 13 times. Their first goal occurred late in the half. Stringam kicked in that goal. A few minutes later, a Bates shot bounced off a goal bar, hit a Provo player, and crashed into the net for the second goal. Stringam kicked in the third goal early in the second half, and the score stayed 3-0 until the final minute when Bates kicked in the fourth American Fork goal.
