Show Spotlight on Governor's Youth Council member American Fork High School junior jun-ior Gerilyn Beck has been named the school's Citizen of the Week. Sixteen years old, she is the oldest old-est of three children of Ramon and Julie Beck of Alpine. She has a brother in the ninth grade and a sister in the fifth grade. Dont count her family relatively small however. Gerilyn has 69 cousins, cous-ins, all living close by. I can tell you," she said, "all their middle names and all their birthdays. They are all my best friends." She enjoys playing the piano with her family. She has taken lessons for ten years and currently studies with Ellen Christenson. A teacher herself, she has five students. In her spare time, she enjoys "goingplaces and doingthings with . my friends." At school, her favorite classes are Advanced Placement (AP) music mu-sic from Lois Johnson and LDS Seminary from Brother Price. "Both of them," she said, "know why they want to teach and they AFHS Citizen off the need love it. They are so excited about their subjects, they want others to catch the vision." Shehas enjoyed almost all ofher classes. Being named to "Who's Who Among American High School Students" Stu-dents" is an honor Gerilyn has received. re-ceived. She also is a member of the Governor's Youth Council, where she and representatives from other schools meet together to establish programs to help school become drug free. She was nominated as Citizen of the Week by counselor Bruce Hoggard, who oversees the Governor's committee. Church St. Among the items for consideration consider-ation is a change which would permit per-mit American Campground to have up to one-half of its spaces occupied by year-round guests. Meet the Candidates Many candidates will be on hand at the American Fork High School auditorium at 7 p.m. for a Meet the Candidates night, sponsored by the high school and junior high school PTSA. The public is invited to attend. AFHS Activities Golf: The state high school golf tournament will be held today at the Homestead Resort in Midway. Preschool program The American Fork Public Library Li-brary will hold two sessions of its preschool program, "Full Speed Ahead," at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Today, the students will study Feet and Flippers and are asked to bring four paper lunch sacks. Timp Special Service District The monthly meeting of the Timpanogos Special Service District Dis-trict will be held tonight starting at 6 p.m. at conference room in the district offices, 6400 N. 5050 West, Utah County. The meeting is open to the public. The Utah Valley Regional Family Fam-ily History Center offers free classes in family history research today. Located on the fourth floor of the Lee Library on the BYU campus, the center is open on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 9 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. 500th Anniversary of Columbus' Colum-bus' arrival in the new world. Televised Debate Pleasant Grove Jr. High will be the site of a televised debate between be-tween Congressional candidates Bill Orton and Richard Harrington tonight at 7 p.m. Local residents are encouraged to attend the debate de-bate as part of a studio audience and are asked to arrive at the school at 6:45 p.m. The debate will be televised Oct. 13at9p.m.onKUED Channel 7. Audience members will ask the questions for tonight's debate. American Fork City Council The American Fork City Council will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall, 31 N. Church St. The group will hold a public hearing hear-ing at 7:15 p.m. on a zone change request at 187 N. 400 East from the R-4 zone to the Rl-7500 zone. During the council session they are expected to take action on the zone change, consider placing stop signs in the Hill Crest subdivision and at the American Fork Pharmacy. Phar-macy. After graduation, she plans on attending a four year college, probably prob-ably BYU or the University of Utah. "I would like to study some part of science," she said, "probably mi-crobioloev mi-crobioloev or genetics." She is carrying an ambitious load of AP classes, including English, En-glish, precalculus, music and art history. Passing tests at the end of the school year will give her college credit in those subjects. Amongthehighlights of her high school years have been playing in the marching band and learning how to drive. She gives her parents credit for any success she has had. "My models are my parents," she said. "They are my best friends. I am grateful that I can get along with them; a lot of people don't. If I follow their advice, I will be fine." She also thanks her friends for helping her. "They all keep me on the right track," she said. Jr. High sets conferences Tonight will be the final session for parent visiting at American Fork Junior High. The session goes from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m. Parents will be able to meet individually with each teacher to discuss their child's progress and what steps can be taken to improve student performance if necessary. Teachers will be arranged in alphabetical order in the halls around the office and in the lunch room. It is suggested that conferences confer-ences be limited to three minutes in order to accommodate all parents. par-ents.
