Fork splits in soccer action; shuts out Granger 4-0 on Monday Alpine sets zoning hearing By DEAN VON MEMMOTT The opening of the soccer season brought mixed results for the American Fork Cavemen last week. On Monday, they won 4-0 on the Granger Lancers' field. However, American Fork took fourth at the two-day Bonneville Laker Classic. On Monday, Caveman Coach Curtis Craig said, "I'm proud of everybody. Everybody produced today. I think our team has a lot to show for itself. It's nice to watch these kids play well. They passed well and wenttoopen spaces. Chad Spence and Gary Nixon each made two goals. It's good to start the season with a win." Playing in cold weather, nobody could score until midway through the first half. About 15 minutes into the period, Spence chipped a short shot into the goal net for the first point. The Jaguars narrowly missed some shots during the next few minutes. Nixon scored the second goal from inside the penalty box, then Spence passed to him a short time afterwards for the third goal. The Cavemen hurt Granger by keepingtheball on the Jaguar field for most of the period. The Jaguars received more bad news when Caveman Chris Lynch accidentally hurt their starting goalie, Paul Isoam. Replacing Caveman goalkeeper Shaun Gardner in the second half, Bruno Carciqueria intercepted several shots, holding Granger scoreless. The Jaguars, in the meantime, kept the Cavemen from scoring a fourth goal until the game's final minutes. Spence made his second point, ending the game's scoring. Lakers Madday Malachi and Dave Merrill each booted in a goal in the first half. Jed Iverson made the third Laker point in the second half. Joel Hurtado made the sole American Fork point in Period 2. The loss put Cavemen against their old arch rivals, the Jordan Beetdiggers, in a game for tournament's tourna-ment's third place spot Wednesday. Wednes-day. The rivalry between them proved to be as much alive as ever as they played with much intensity. The scoring opened with Spence passing pass-ing to Nixon for a goal made on a shot from inside the penalty box. For a while, the Cavemen managed man-aged to protect their 1-0 lead. Suddenly, Beetdigger Kurt Welch made an unassisted goal to tie game at one. The scored stayed tied at one for the rest of the half. Meanwhile, Mean-while, Matt Guericio put great defense for American Fork as he blocked two corner kicks and several sev-eral steals. Keeping the ball on the Cavemen's Cave-men's side of the field in the early second half, the Beetdiggers tipped the game to their favor when Magic Miller kicked in a goal. Teammate Eric Tripp lobbed a shot into the goal net several minutes later. Jordan goalie Brandon Sargent intercepted shots by Nixon and Spence, smothering the Cavemen's hopes for victory. Citizen Athlete of the Week: senior pitcher Brandon Crotts By DEAN VON MEMMOTT A senior on the American Fork Cavemen's baseball team, Brandon Bran-don Crotts is off to one of his best starts in his pitchingcareer. In the recent Polar Bear Tournament, . played at various sites, he posted a 2-0 record. His pitching helped American Fork overwhelm both Jordan and Layton in the tourney. With the Cavemen going undefeated in the tourney, he says his coach, Kim Nelson, told them that they had more difficult games facing them. The senior says that among the tough teams facing them this year are the Pleasant Grove Vikings and Orem Tigers. Crotts points out that Pleasant Grove, for instance, has almost all of its starters back. In spite of facing tough foes, Crotts says, "We've been hitting good as a team." His comment is supported by the fact that during the Polar Bear Tournament, teammates team-mates Jared Hutchings, Kevin Lewis, and Tyler Eastman made extra-base hits that stung opponents. oppo-nents. The son of Dale and Diane Crotts, the Caveman is a former resident of Lehi. Duringhis sixyears in that community, he played for a Pony League team called the Twins. He moved to American Fork his sophomore year. He played in the Cavemen's basketball program for his first two years at American Fork. He says he decided not to play basketball his senior year, since he wanted to concentrate on getting get-ting a college baseball scholarship. He says his favorite baseball game was a preseason one against the Springville Red Devils last spring. The Caveman pitcher in that game, he recalls, "We beat them 1-0. They were supposed to be high in 3-A rankings." As a chucker, he says, "I have all the confidence of the guys behind me. They can make great plays like mwm diving catches." When he is not on the mound, he is playing right field. Region Four play will open in April. He says that with only three teams from the conference can go to state this year. So he predicts that competition for the playoff spots will be very tough. I U I I Brandon Crotts - s Brandon Crotts takes aim in recent pre-season game against Jordan.
