Emily Mendenhall Emily, a student at American Fork High School, is the daughter of Robert and Phyllis Mendenhall. She is the sixth of seven children in her family and has lived all but her first two years in Alpine. She enjoys life and keeps real busy. She started piano lessons in second grade and is now an accomplished accom-plished pianist. She has had fun accompanying a cappella choir and other groups at school and church. She enjoys all sports and has participated on the high school softball and basketball teams. She lettered in swimming and also in volleyball. She also enjoys racquet-ball. racquet-ball. Ann Johnson, her coach at the high school, says of her, "Emily Mendenhall is one of the hardest working, most dedicated girl athletes ath-letes at American Fork High School. She also does beautiful needlework. One hobby that she enjoys very much and at which she spends considerable time is helping her Dad and brother train quarter-horses. quarter-horses. She is developing some very good horsemanship skills. She works very hard at maintaining main-taining her 3.9 GPA, and has been on the honor roll all of her junior high and high school years. At the present time as a senior, she ranks 29th in her class of 454 students. Jay Allen, one of her teachers, honors Emily as a "super fine lady and a""" top student. Shehas demonstrated ;' excellent responsibility and has learned how to be a good citizen." Bruce Huggard, a counselor, not only refers to Emily as a top notch student, but say s she has "the h igh-est igh-est of character and is well liked by her peers. She is also highly respected re-spected by the faculty." Her mom says she is an "absolute "abso-lute joy and delight" to her parents and shares a special friendship with her youngest brother. Joanne Carter and the oldest of three children in the family. A student at American Fork Junior High School, he was nominated nomi-nated ns "Youth of the Month" by his history teacher, Mike Mower. He recognizes Jedd as an "outstanding "outstand-ing individual in many ways, an excellent student who is self-motivated. Jess is disciplined and responsible respon-sible in his approach in and out of the classroom. He has a GPA of 3.95 and is in 2nd ranking in his ninth grade class. Not only is Jedd a success academically, aca-demically, but he also excels in Am. Fork High School Citizen of the Week: Mindy Blake In her junior year at American Fork H igh Sch ool , M i n dy Blake h as been named the school's Citizen of the Week. She is 16 years old, and the third of five children of Keith and Ami Blake of American Fork. Mindy includes in her family a 22-year-old brother-in-law and an eight-month-old niece. "I like to be with my family and friends," she said. Some of her favorite times with her family have been trips to Hawaii and Florida and a month-long trip in a motor home to the Eastern United States. Some of her hobbies are snow skiing and crafts. "One of my favorite places to ski is Brighton," she said. "I also enjoy doing crafts such as cross stitch." A member of the school's color guard for two years, she considers it a highlight of her school days. "That is really fun," she said. "I like to be in color guard. It takes up a lot of time, but I really enjoy it." The group recently took first place in the WinterGuard competition. Mindy was nominated as Citizen Citi-zen of the Week by Laurel Shelley, Am. One of the places Mindy has used her interpersonal skills is in the school orchestra. "I play the violin,"she said, "and a little bit of piano. I am also learning learn-ing how to play the guitar." Mindy listed orchestra and LDS Seminary among her favorite classes. She has enjoyed many of her teachers and considers a good teacher someone who plays things well, answers questions clearly and makes things interesting. Her future plans include traveling travel-ing to LDS Church historical sites with Heritage Tours. She hopes to attend Ricks College Col-lege and then BYU, with the decision deci-sion to be made later for her major field of study.
