By DEAN VON MEMMOTT Jeremy Dalton's two straight homers were wonderful for his Phillies to watch, but those hits could not do much to save the team from getting beaten 9-7 by the Orioles in American Fork Pony League action at Bus Manning Field Thursday night. For the Phillies, the game was a heartbreaker because they twice traded the lead with Orioles. The Phillies took command of the game in top of the first when Ryan Card clubbed a one-run double, but the Orioles did not let them stay on top for long. After Philly pitcher Justin Anderson K'd Brent Rawlings, he walked Trent Savage. That walk enabled Richard Ludwig to swat a one-run double of his own. He then came home on an error in right field. Determined to prove that they could beat the Orioles this year, the Phillies came out swinging hard in the second. On two outs, Dalton drove in Bret Wiscombe with a baseline double fired into left field. Chris Schomaker followed with a double, which drove in Dalton to put the team up 3-2. Then pitcher Ludwig cooled off the hot Phillies by striking out Card. The Orioles then took to skinning the Phillies in the bottom of the second. The Flock's four-run rally opened with Kevin Bishop scoring on a Philly goof. Following that run, the Orioles loaded the bases on one out, giving Shad Morris the chance of driving in two runs on a single into center. Ludwig came home on a passed ball for the final run of the rally. Though it put the Orioles ahead for good, it did not mean they had the game wrapped up. They had to battle bat-tle for four more innings before they could definitely say they had the game in their pocket. Smacking a one-out single in the third, Tony Morse tried opening a comeback for the Phillies, but a throw from catcher Morris mowed him down while he was trying to steal second. With the Phillies stung by that setback, set-back, Ludwig struck out Mike Manning. In the third's bottom half, pitcher Anderson got even with the Orioles by striking out two of their three hitters. hit-ters. As hot as Anderson was from the mound, his throwing could not outclass out-class Ludwig's. In the fourth, for example, Ludwig fanned three straight hitters. Meanwhile, the Orioles kept the bases loaded long enough in the fourth four-th for a Hunter walk to bring in Rawlings for an unearned run. r i j - ' ' ' 4 I 1 ' V, ' v 1- , - i 1 Phillies from capitalizing on the hit. After Philly Coach Sherlin Manning had Card relieve Anderson at the mound, the Orioles picked an unearned unear-ned run on an error, then Bishop knocked In a run to conclude Oriole scoring for the night. In the seventh, Dalton rapped his second straight homer over the left field fence. The hit gave the Phillies a golden chance to tie the game as Ludwig walked Card and Anderson. However, the Oriole K'd Morse to secure the win. I- t ' : . - " ' " Travis Baster (4) returns to second as Philly Tony Morse tags him. Ludwig guarded the Orioles' 74 That first home run threw a brief lead until the fifth when Dalton hit scare into the Flock, but it didn't the first of two straight solo homers, intimidate Ludwig. He kept the Top Ten Flyers win first in fast pitch league The Top Ten Flyers climbed to the top of a 10 team girl's fast pitch Softball league and met the only team to hand them a loss during league play, winning the championship cham-pionship game with a score of 3-0. Playing two nights a week against other Utah teams, the Flyers entered en-tered the tournament competition seeded second after one loss to the Pacers and one tie game, but turned around to shut out the Pacers in the final game of the tourney. During the first inning, Top Ten put two runs on the scoreboard on Erin Measom's stand up double. In the bottom of that inning, the Pacers loaded the bases with only one out, but the Flyers held them from scoring. With the exception of a fly ball caught by Vinny Storey late in the game and a couple of connections in the first inning, the Pacers couldn't get the ball out of the infield. Pitcher Lisa Hall struck out the first three batters in the second inning and piled up 12 strikeouts in the game. The third inning was also three up and three down. The third run came in the fifth inning after Kim Wiscombe walked and Vikki Allred placed a good bunt for a base hit after which Vinny Storey singled and Kim scored the run. Raquel Scott's base on balls loaded the bases with only one out. Hall tried a sacrifice bunt, but the runner was tagged out at home plate. In a well played game without errors, the Flyers left the bases loaded in their final turn at bat. Coaches Lane Scott and George Storey were pleased with the progress of their players in their first year of 18 and under classification and feel the league has helped prepare the Flyers for summer tournament play. The team still has games left in a Thursday league also in Salt Lake City. Although not competing, Top Ten will play the women's teams who have a "bye" at Shannon Field in Pleasant Grove and home town fans are invited to come out and watch some good fast pitch softball during the next few weeks. Cavebatters named to all-region and all-state teams Two American Fork Cavemen were named all-region and all-state baseball teams Wednesday. Chris Hermansen and Matt Lamb made Region Two's first team. Also, Hermansen was named to the Utah State 4-A first team and Lamb the second team. During the season, Hermansen played three positions for American Fork: pitcher, first base, and left field. Lamb played catcher. Region Two coaches also gave honorable mention to American Fork players Jared Anderson, Vic Valdez and Jose Valdez. )uCaniSlake DacFsDay Monumental.
