Larsen. t e uiud Cotton Rosser, professional rodeo stock contractor recently stated, "Missing out on my chance to be a world champion cowboy was probably the best thing that ever happened to me," recalling the 1955 tractor accident that nearly cost him his legs. At the time Rosser was a contender for national acclaim, competing in both the riding and the timed events of Professional Rodeo. After the accident, fellow members of the R.C.A. raised money for Rosser to open a western store in Marysville, California. This eventually led to his becoming a stock contractor and to his most recent titles, Rodeo Man of the Year and Most Colorful Man in Rodeo. Cotton - he acquired that (now professional) nickname as a boy because of his white hair - was one of five children of a Long Beach, California carpenter. "I was a drugstore cowboy dreaming of the ranch life. At 10 1 entered a kids calf-riding calf-riding event, got bucked off, and loved it!" From this beginning Cotton launched a career, winning 29 trophy buckles and 6 championship saddles by his early 20's. "Regarding the championship, I guess you could say I was knocking at the door pretty well jusr befoie- the accident," Cotton iilan In Elodeo' Many Winners In Merchants' Tourney Dick Dixon, Velma Peterson, Del Hoglund and Thelma Beighley were the winners of the 1st Annual Merchants Tournament held this past weekend at the Tri-City Golf Course in American Fork. The tournament was hosted by the Tri-City Mens Golf Association and sponsored by local merchants and businesses of Am. Fork, PI. Grove, Lehi and Provo. Blake Street, president of the mens association, termed the event a huge success and hopes that it will develop into one of the major tournaments tour-naments of the area. There were 100 entrants vying for over $1500.00 in prizes and merchandise certificates. In addition to the low grosslow net competition there was a putting contest sponsored by Binnal Insurance, Mountain View Bank, Am. Fork Citizen, and Thrifty "C". To ensure that everyone came away a winner, everyone received a Big Mac from the new McDonalds Mc-Donalds restaurant in Am. Fork. Sponsored by the Rotary Club, the events will be on Saturday, July 19, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the American Fork Junior High School track and field. Medals will be given to the winners. For the young participants, there will be a softball throw and a 40-yard dash. As the participants get older, there are shot put m i mi stated. It was after graduating from California Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo that Cotton used his rodeo earnings to purchase his ranch. As a contender in nearly every type of rodeo event Cotton suffered many fractures and pulled muscles. Ironically his most serious accident occurred when he was performing ranch chores. "I was using the posthole digger on the tractor and was trying to make one of the holes a little deeper. Foolishly I jumped on the attachment with both feet, getting my legs caught in the auger shaft. During my convalescence I discovered I had many real friends; rodeo buddies, who put on a benefit performance that helped pay the hospital bills and make the down payment on my western clothing store." Out of the wheel chair and able to walk again, Cotton found that he still had "Rodeo Fever." He teamed with a friend to buy a small contracting company. Ten years ago he became the operations manager of the Flying U Rodeo Co. - owned by Imperial Valley cattleman Ed Rutherford which made Cotton Rosser the world champion rodeo producer. The Flying U Rodeo will be at the Lehi arena for the annual Lehi Roundup.
