Tigers battle to 1-1 Jared Lloyd NORTH COUNTY Soccer players have to deal with a number of of obstacles beyond just the opposing team: Field conditions, wind, referees and the ball itself, just to name a few. In Tuesday afternoon's exciting ex-citing game between visiting Springville and homestanding , Orem that would decide the Region 7 crown, weather appeared ap-peared to not be a factor, since it was a gorgeous fall day without a cloud in sight. But the Red Devils got an assist from the setting sun in the final five minutes of action, putting in the equalizer and then holding on for the 1-1 tie to win the region championship. champion-ship. "It was two teams playing play-ing their hearts out," said Springville head coach Ryan Swanson. "There weren't a lot of scoring opportunities for either side, but we were lucky to get the equalizer late in the game." After the Tigers had taken the lead early in the second half, the Red Devils couldn't seem to create the chance they needed to knot things up. With the minutes ticking away, it appeared the Osem might be on its, way ft) wmning the title. - But a foul call- which was hotly debated by'the Tiger fans and coaches froniihe sideline gave Springville a 40-yard free kick from the left side of the field. i,; , . Red Devil senior defender Chase Joyner sent the ball into the box, where players from both sides hd trouble finding if because itj angle put it di- . rectly in front of the sun. "I looked back and the ball, was coming, (hen it disar , peared." saiI Springville junior . midfielder Kim Stratford, fl couldn't see ft because the sun ' was right there, so I tried to get out of the way. Then I felt the ball at my feet and 1 just kicked it in." Orem sophomore keeper Hilary Hi-lary Smith had the same problem, prob-lem, managing to find the ball in time to knock it down but unable to keep it away from Stratford. Tiger head coach Ed Louder admitted the sun played a role but said his team could've played it better. DAVIS ARCHIBALONorth County Springville's Vanessa Johnson, left, and Orem's Steinia Dort go after the ball during their game on Tuesday. "(Smith's) vision was impaired im-paired but she was able to get a hand on it," he said. "We just didn't clear it. We let two of their players get in on it and give credit to Springville for going after it." The late goal eliminated the Orem advantage that they had earned in the 52nd minute off a great cross from junior midfielder mid-fielder Kaci McNeil to senior forward Tanisfa Wilson in the middle of the Red Devil penalty box. Wilson managed to control con-trol the ball and flip it just over the head of Springville senior keeper Sadie Clements. ' The tie was enough to allow the Red Devils to edge Orem by two points in the Region 7 standings and get the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 4A state tournament. "It's so awesome," Stratford said. "It's very rewarding. We've worked so hard this year and we definitely deserve it." While the Tigers would love to be the top seed, the defending defend-ing 4A champs know that going go-ing in as the second-place team isn't a bad thing: That was the spot last year's squad occupied before winning it all. "I don't know what the brackets look like yet, but we're going to have a game here next 7 mtmmsmmmm tie with Springville VV - Tuesday and we're going to be prepared," Louder said. Both teams will host opening round games as Orem will welcome wel-come either Mountain Crest or Bonneville while West or Olympus will travel to Springville. Spring-ville. Football If football games lasted 12 minutes, Thursday night's game featuring Orem and Springville would have been a one-sided affair. But unfortunately for Orem, high school football games last 48 minutes. At Orem, the Springville Red Devils fought back from an early deficit to beat the Tigers urArTf 17 ANNUAL 5Sf.sS,iat( O' :i5 21-9 for their fourth straight victory. The Red Devils (4-2, 2-0) scored 21 unanswered points and stifled the Tigers (4-3, 1-2), who failed to reach the endzone after scoring a touchdown touch-down on their first drive. Things could not have started start-ed worse for Springville. After Orem's Bryan Grover sacked Springville quarterback Isaac Allred on the first play of the game, the Tigers knocked the ball loose from Springville running back Colton Ramon and recovered on the Springville Spring-ville 16-yard line. Five plays later, Tiger quarterback quar-terback Josh Flamblin punched the ball in from a yard out for a touchdown. Early in the second quarter, Orem punter Keenan Kar-ratti Kar-ratti pinned the Red Devils on their own 1-yard line. On the next play, Orem's Justin Long dropped Ramon in the endzone for a safety to put the Tigers ahead 9-0. But things went south for Orem from there. Springville turned it on in the second quarter when All-red All-red found senior Luke Framp-ton Framp-ton behind the Tiger secondary for a 15-yard score. Later, with Orem pinned deep in its own territory, it was Springville's turn to score on defense. Tiger running back Camilo Villagra coughed up the ball, and Springville's Brandon Boyer jumped on it in the end zone to give the lead to the Red Devils 14-9. It was Springville's defense again that stepped up near the end of the first half. The Tigers advanced the ball to the Springville 3-yard line, but the Red Devils kept Orem out of the endzone, and time ran out on the Tigers in the first half. It was more of the same in the 2nd half, as Orem struggled strug-gled to move the ball on the stingy Red Devil defense. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Allred lobbed a perfect pass to Frampton in the corner of the endzone for a 22-yard 22-yard score.
