Show '"""I Thursday, August 7, 2008 OREM TIMES Page 13 Emily Marlowe NORTH COUNTY STAFF I love the rain. I could live in a city where the rain fell like sparkling water daily. I love the smell and the sound of rain. I love to be on our porch when it rains, I love to be camping when it rains at night on our trailer; I love to wake up in the middle of the night to a rainstorm. rain-storm. I love the rain. I remember years ago being at a friend's house where they had a large tomato garden. My friend's mom had asked if my friend and I would go out and pick a few tomatoes for dinner. I remember stepping out back of her house, and thinking that a rainstorm was on the way. I could smell it moving in and feel the wind on my face. We knew we had to move quickly and get the tomatoes picked, or we would soon be soaked. The rain came too quickly and we grabbed what Orem museum receives federal donation DAILY HERALD The Orem Heritage Museum Mu-seum at SCERA received an ' important collection Tuesday from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal fed-eral government agency that supports the nation's museums muse-ums and libraries. Institute director Dr. Anne-Imelda Anne-Imelda Radice donated a collection col-lection of books that has been awarded to small museums around the country to assist in the care and preservation of collections within the museum. mu-seum. The collection, called the Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, contains a core set of books and other media dedicated ded-icated to the care of museum collections. The Bookshelf addresses ad-dresses such topics as the philosophy phi-losophy and ethics of collecting, collect-ing, collections management and planning, emergency preparedness, and culturally specific conservation issues. We ended up with some beautiful, ripe red tomatoes and some not-so-ripe green tomatoes. I remember that night we had bacon and tomato sandwiches sand-wiches and fried green tomatoes. toma-toes. It was the first time I had ever had fried green tomatoes. Oh, they were delicious! I remember re-member having the back door of my friend's kitchen open, smelling the rain and eating fried green tomatoes. Some memories never fade. I took the recipe home that night and tucked it away. Recently, I found the box with that recipe in it and several sev-eral others. I was taken back in time, and wanted to share a memory and recipe with you this week. I know many of you grow a tomato garden and wonder what you will do with all of your tomatoes. Pick them early, while they are still green and enjoy a delicious meal or side dish of fried green tomatoes. You can use red tomatoes, but be very careful; they tend to be mushy and soggy, no matter how long you cook them. Be sure to drain your toma SCERA, said he hopes the donation will help staff understand un-derstand how to better care for antique items. Large museums have conservators who care for items and know how to preserve them, but small museums such as the Heritage Museum often try to just fix items the best way they can. "Small museums don't have that opportunity," he said. "They have a very limited budget." Workers at the Orem Heritage Heri-tage Museum were not sure whether to try and restore an 1880s tricycle or leave it alone. The museum also has an old mail cart and several old rifles, and Lee said it is hard to know whether restoring restor-ing the items would diminish dimin-ish their value. Lee said he repaired the mail cart with gorilla glue, but he does not know if it was the best way to tackle the problem. "Hopefully, we'll be able to look in these books and see a better solution," he said.
