Show OREM TIMES Thursday, June 12, 2008 Realignment plan finalized; Orem schools to compete in same region Page 10 Jared Lloyd NORTH COUNT With the final draft in, Timpanogos, Mountain View, and Orem high schools will be where they belong in the same region. The three schools will be joining Timpview, Lehi and Saratoga Springs to form the new Region 7. The schools will compete in the 4A classification which will have as many as 31 schools in it. Heading into the final official of-ficial meeting of the 2009-13 realignment committee of the Utah High School Activities Association As-sociation Tuesday afternoon, very few kerns appeared to be directly affecting Utah Valley teams. The only real surprises were three changes that will make a direct impact on local teams. The most significant of which involves in-volves adjusting the schools that will compete in 4A. After lengthy debate, the committee elected to have Uintah Uin-tah compete as 4A school in a 3A region with state tournament tourna-ment participation determined by some formula determined in the future. That means that none of the 12 local schools that will be 4A during that time period will be asked to travel to Vernal for league competition. "We were happy with the compromise that meant that we wouldn't have to travel to Uintah," Uin-tah," said Guy Fugal, vice-president of the Alpine School Board and Region 4 representative on the UHSAA Board of Trustees. "We wanted to keep things in the Valley as much as possible." The other change was the evening of two 4A regions in the Valley at six teams apiece I M cog RUE PHOTOSNortti County Above, Mountain View's Anthony Heimuli tries to stiff arm Orem's Tyler Boulter on Oct. 19. 2007. "Nothing ever is campkiely ideal," ide-al," said George Bayles, Timpview principal and Region 7 representative. representa-tive. "Ideally, Provo and Timpview would be in the same region but well still compete with each other and have our rivalry. "There are pluses and minus es. Not being in the same region might take some of the heat out of the rivalry, but now both teams could win region titles," The only other change affecting affect-ing local schools involved establishing estab-lishing Lone Peak, American Fork and Pleasant Grove in a 5A region (Region 4) with Alt a, Hill-crest, Hill-crest, Jordan and Brighton. "We might've been with some of the west -side schools but we wanted to be with the east-side schools," said FugaL "Many of them are closer and though there are a lot of powerhouses, we'll compete." Overall, both Fugal and Bayles said they were pleased with how the final realignment turned out. "Everything worked out well," Bayles said. "It created a good balance in the Valley overall. over-all. We came out in good shape." The realignment will take affect af-fect in the fall of 2009 and win continue for four years until the process begins again in 2012 for the 2013-14 season.
