Mountain View's Michael Chester helped anchor the rock-solid Bruin defense for three years Jared Lloyd NORTH COUNTY Boys soccer teams facing fac-ing Mountain View over the past three years had to face a daunting fact: They only had a 50 percent chance of scoring. In 58 games featuring the Bruins since the beginning of the 2006 season, Mountain View has sent opponents off the field with a big goose egg on the scoreboard an impressive impres-sive 29 times. Certainly the defensive scheme and the talent of the backline for the Bruins played a big part of that but the player who made it all go was the guy between the pipes, Michael Mi-chael Chesler. "We played with more confidence with Chesler back there," said Mountain View head coach Mark Graham "It stemmed from who we had in goal. We gave up fewer goals than anyone in 4A (in 2008) and he was a big leader on our team." He was a rock for the Bruins Bru-ins and played a vital role in getting the young team back to the state championship for the second straight season. For all of his accomplishments, accomplish-ments, the Daily Herald is pleased to name Chesler the 2008 Utah Valley Boys Soccer Player of the Year. It's quite an accomplishment for a player that faced some : surprising opposition early on about his decision to guard the net. "I was playing for the Rang ers (an area club team) and I didn't make the team," he recalled. "So I tried out as a keeper. My mom actually got mad because she didn't want to pay for me just to sit back there." From the Under-12 division divi-sion on, however, Chesler has played keeper. That doesn't mean he couldn't be just as successful elsewhere, according accord-ing to Graham. "If we had another keeper, he probably would have been one of our best field players," the Mountain View head coach said. "He's very athletic, can play possession, is fast and coordinated, and has a good touch." But the Bruins cant complain com-plain about the success they've had with Chesler in the goaL He's kept opponents from , scoring 29 times including 10 times this past season. "He's so well-known, other teams knew it was going to be tough against Chesler," Graham Gra-ham said. "If they were going to beat us, they'd have to play great because he doesn't give up cheap goals." As Chesler looks back, he remembers each of his high See CHESLER, Page 1 1 BASEBALL Mountain View in search of new coach after Cooper decides to move on After more than a decade of involvement in the Mountain Moun-tain View baseball program, Chris Cooper announced his resignation as the school's head baseball coach. Cooper led the Bruins to three region championships and a state runner-up finish during his tenure. Most recently, Cooper led the Bruins to a region title this season.
