Andrea, 17, is a senior and plays the oboe. Julie, 15, is a sophomore whose instrument is the viola. Both were named to this year's all-state orchestra, orches-tra, according to Lance LeVar, instrumental music director at THS. Andrea and Julie are the youngest two of Leslie and Brenda Slaugh's five children, and, not surprisingly, are part of a musical family. The girls' oldest sister, Rebecca, plays the flute and guitar. Another sister, Sandra, plays the viola, and their brother, Scott, plays the piano. "All of us learned to play the piano until we could at least play the (church) hymns," said Andrea. rci Canyon View Jr. High has released re-leased the honor roll for the second term of the 2007-2008 school year. Both of the Slaugh parents play the piano as well. In addition, addi-tion, Dad plays the baritone, a mini-tuba, and Mom plays the guitar. As they were growing up, Andrea said family members "worked it out" with practicing schedules. "It's not like we were fighting fight-ing over the piano or anything," any-thing," Julie laughed. In previous years, Andrea said, the all-state auditions were done on tape, but this year, the performances were live. Julie said those trying out on stringed instruments were asked to play challenging selections se-lections from the pieces they would be performing in the all-state concert, as well as to sight read. The sisters' selection as all-state all-state musicians then involved several days of intense rehearsals re-hearsals just prior to a January concert in Abravanel Hall. With Julie taking orchestra classes at Timpanogos, and Andrea taking band classes, the two said they have not played together a great deal at school, but for two years they have both been members of an after-school group called the Lyceum Repertory Orchestra, and, prior to that, were in the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. The young women said they perform together "every once in a while" at church and other functions, and they have found one duet specifically written for the viola and oboe. Other pieces have to be adapted. Andrea said her future plans include attending BYU-Idaho. Last Saturday, for the first time in what seems like ages, 1 went out to lunch with some friends without carrying my coat with me. I thought that maybe this was the end of a very long sad time. I was wrong. The next day it was snowing. What is this weather doing do-ing to students? Third term seems to be the worst term for GPA's, and possibly when most fights between friends happen. I put the blame on snow. If you're especially lucky you probably miss long days of boating, wakeboarding, skiing, tubing, kneeboarding or what ever your favorite water sport is.
