Zimmerman MARIO RUIZDaily Herald Dr. John Patten, principal of Suncrest Elementary in Orem, receives the first annualJohn T. Patten Suncrest Superstar Award from Sydne Jacques of the PTA May 25. Suncrest principal gets school award Michael Rigert NORTH COUNTY STArF Students love Mr. John Patten. Pat-ten. Teachers and staff love Mr. John Patten. And perhaps most tellingly, parents and the Suncrest Elementary School PTA members love Mr. John Patten. Patten, the Orem elementary school's principal for the past five years, was surprised by those who love him including includ-ing his wife Arryn and their children during an assembly Friday morning at which he was made the first recipient of a special school annual award created in his honor. The $1,000 John Patten Superstar Award was the brainchild of Sydne Jacques, parent and longtime member of the Suncrest PTA. Jacques and other parents and staff had nominated Patten, who holds a doctorate's degree in educational leadership and policy from the University of Utah, for the state's Huntsman Hunts-man Excellence in Education honors. When Patten wasn't selected select-ed for the Huntsman award, Jacques, who owns her own civil engineering company, remembers crying at her computer. com-puter. "This man has impacted so many lives," she recalled thinking as she pondered the language of the application that encouraged passing on the gifts of education on to those in need. In that instant, Jacques decided she would take matters mat-ters into her own hands, and not only honor the principal she says turned Suncrest Elementary El-ementary around, but create an homage to him that would continue year after year to recognize contributions to education at Suncrest Elementary. Elemen-tary. Jacques' company will present annually an $1,000 award to the administrator, teacher, staff member, or volunteer who has made the most outstanding contributions contribu-tions to the school. "It's a legacy to him for all the great changes he's made since he came to the school," Jacques said. The positive transformations transforma-tions at the school that Patten has brought about are almost too many to number, she said. Among them are an optimistic attitude that's been infectious with students, teachers, staff and parents. "The number one change is an incredible turn around in morale," Jacques said. "Because he does his best, it's lifted everyone. He leads by example." Char Edwards, Suncrest's lead secretary and an employee employ-ee at the school for 12 years, calls Patten a real innovator who tries to help everyone around him be their best. She said he's always in the cafeteria cafete-ria talking to students (most of whom he knows by name) or can be found in the classroom class-room reading to students as a reward for good behavior. "His focus Ls the kids and how to give them the best opportunities op-portunities and education," she said. "He's probably the most kid-oriented principal I've ever seen." Jacques said Patten will get down to kids' level, including in-depth discussions on topics like Star Wars and Game-Cube. Game-Cube. Just the other day, she said, Patten waved and said Hi to her daughter who is a junior ju-nior high student as he passed her on the street. "She said 'Dr. Patten waved to me and that was so cool,'" Jacques said. "Coming from junior high kids, that means a lot." Suncrest's principal has also been instrumental in securing federal funding for an after school club program at the Title Ti-tle I school, helping struggling families in the neighborhood by offering students classes in soccer, karate and cooking, Edwards said. Erin Thomas, the school's assistant principal, said Patten's dedication and the coastructive way he works with students and parents so that everyone wins Ls inspiring. inspir-ing. Behavioral problems with students have declined significantly sig-nificantly since Patten came to Suncrest, and students, teachers teach-ers and staff treat each other better, she said. "His behavior shows as how to work with others. He doesn't ever say anything critical or bad about anyone and that trickles down," Thomas said. "We were a family before, but now we're a little, tight -knit family." Jacques said every aspect of Suncrest from learning to students' and employees' emotional emo-tional health to the physical appearance ap-pearance of the school has improved im-proved under Patten's watch "The thing I admire about him most ... is the way he makes every person feel special spe-cial from ... the lunch lady to the part-time custodian," she said. BRAYDEN SANTO Today is a glorious day Bruins, Bru-ins, the last "day" of school. Technically there have been no classes since Friday, but the term ends today. Graduation Gradu-ation was last night, which means that all the juniors of this year are seniors. That means I'm a senior. Crazy. So these last few weeks have been pretty crazy. Seminary Semi-nary has been intermixed with school finals, along with staying stay-ing up late to finish any last homework. I particularly particu-larly enjoy how "uncluttered" they are. They had too much stuff in them last year, so it was nice. In other news this past week, our boy's soccer team went to the state semifinals, won in a shootout, with a score of four to two. It was really re-ally close. Winning that game meant that we'd be playing the Jordan Beet diggers the next Friday. Of course, being the State match, everyone went. After a long game, we unfortunately lost. Even worse, it was by one point. Even worse than that, they got that point from a penalty kick that a lot of people think shouldn't have been given. Ouch. But on to happier things, like summer. Personally, I'm excited, because it'll be a nice break from the schedule of school. Yay for free time. Lindsay Bolton told me, "I'm so glad school's out because now I can finally have time to be me." I agree with that statement full heartedly.
