After Rhett Nelson's performance per-formance in Timpanogos' 10-0 home win on Friday, most of the Bruin hitters went home licking their wounds. Nelson shut down the Mountain View offense, striking strik-ing out nine and allowing only four hits in sue innings. Pitching in miserable, wet conditions, Nelson only got stronger as the game wore on as seven of his Ks came in the final three innings. "I'm proud of Rhett," said Timpanogos coach Kim Nelson. "Those are not easy conditions to pitch in. That's a great outing." Rhett Nelson was really only in trouble once. In the second inning, Mountain View loaded the bases after Chad Gonzales and Ronnie Strauss were hit by pitches and Collin Mangum walked. However, Nelson induced an inning ending 4-6-3 double play to escape unscathed. "With guys like (Bret) Lopez Lo-pez and (Jordan) Cooper up the middle, a ground ball is a sure thing," Rhett Nelson said. "Whenever I pitch, I feel real comfortable with my infield." In addition to inducing and turning the big double play, Nelson, Lopez and Cooper also had exceptional days if Monday's games were icing on baseball cake Russ Lyman NORTH COUNTY I'll admit it, I'm spoiled. Being the holder of the unofficial title as the person who has seen the most games involving Region 4 baseball teams this year (I saw parts of 10 games involving region teams in one weekend in St. George alone), I've seen some of the best high school baseball base-ball this country has to offer, including a pair of wins by region teams over programs that were ranked in Baseball America's top 15 in the nation. na-tion. While I have thoroughly enjoyed every game I've attended at-tended this season, what I witnessed on Monday was the icing on the cake after watching watch-ing portions of Timpanogos' exciting come-from-behind 14-10 win over American Pioneers top John Boyd HERALD CORRESPONDENT With a shot at the Region 7 title on the line, the Lehi baseball base-ball team wasted no time taking tak-ing care of the Orem Tigers 8-2 on Tuesday. After suffering a tough 8-0 loss to Provo on Monday, Josh Swensen took the mound and made sure that his team would get a chance to play Springville Spring-ville for the Region 7 title on Wednesday. Swensen pitched the complete-game victory, adding seven strikeouts. He went 2-for4 2-for4 from the plate as well. It was a team effort at the plate as nine out of 10 Lehi batters bat-ters got one hit or more putting Lehi's hit total at 11 for the day. Orem's first run of the game came in the second inning Unbeaten Orem girls lacrosse team Russ Lyman DAILY HERALD Quick, name the only undefeated un-defeated sports team in Utah County. Time's up. It's the Orem girls lacrosse team that has swept through the season with a 12-0 season. Not only has the team won all of its games, but it has done so in convincing fashion, winning win-ning all but two of the games by more than five goals. The blemish-free regular at the plate. Nelson helped his own cause with a pair of hits. Lopez hit a home run to straightaway center and also had two walks. Cooper ended the game on the 10-run rule with a bases-loaded double. Eleven T'Wolves had at least one hit. "It's fun to be back swinging swing-ing the bats like we've been all season," Rhett Nelson said. "We're back where we need to be." Soccer I American Fork 3, Timpanogos 2: At Orem, the Cavemen scored on a late penalty kick to earn the win. American Fork (4-7-2, 3-5-1) is now in third place in Region 4, just ahead of Timpanogos (4-64, 24-3). Softball I Pleasant Grove 6, Timpanogos 5: At Pleasant Grove, Torrey Best got the job done in all facets of the game. She threw 5 innings in-nings of solid pitching and struck out four, then drove home four of her team's six runs to lead the Vikings to the huge Region 4 win on Tuesday. In an inning which Pleasant Grove (6-11, 6-3) scored all six of its runs, Best belted a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to put her team on top. The T'Wolves (10-9, 6-3) tried to fight back, scoring four runs in the next two innings, in-nings, but couldn't come up with enough runs to steal the win. Fork, as well as Mountain View's 2-1 win over Egan Smith and Pleasant Grove. In the Timpanogos game the T' Wolves came roaring out of the gates and opened up an 8-1 lead behind a pair of three-run homers by Bret Lopez and Taylor Lyons. I watched as the Cavemen started their comeback in the fifth inning, then headed from Timpanogos to Mountain View High School to catch the end of the game against the Vikings. After making record time through the rush hour mess that is the Orem construction project, I watched Sam Roden draw a one-out walk off of Smith. Chad Gonzales then pushed a perfect bunt to the right side past a diving Smith for a single. Jordan Gustin then struck out, but Collin Mangum picked Orem baseball; soccer team doubles up when Jordan Sargent knocked in Goose Kallunki. After three quick outs by Lehi, the Tigers scored again in the third inning in-ning on a Mark Morgan RBI single to score Jordan Johnston. John-ston. Johnston was Orem's only multi-hit player, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. After 2 innings Orem found themselves in a one-run game, and just two outs away from closing out the third until Lehi went on another three-run streak. Two Orem errors, followed fol-lowed by hits from Dustin Bea-craft, Bea-craft, Ryan Christ of fersen and Sach Petersen, put Lehi up 6-2 going into the fourth In the fourth inning Orem had an opportunity to gain some ground with runners on first and third with lead-off hitter Jordan Johnston at the plate. But Johnston flew out to season was capped off with a 13-12 overtime win over Woods Cross on Friday. Although the team is very balanced, it has been led by Emily Hill and Maggie Perry, who anchor the offense. The defense has been led by Katie Payne, Angie Maughan and Ruth Deurtch, as well as goalie Melissa Fiso. "Throughout the season the team has played so well together togeth-er as a team," said coach Paige Hanna. The only championship match that went to three sets saw Lone Peak's Dan Lawler and Ryan Wong team up to down Mountain Moun-tain View's Jesse Ericksen and Adam Lewis. After a splitting the first two sets, Lawler and Wong ran away with a 60 win in the third set. Lone Peak's region championship champi-onship is just one of many accomplishments ac-complishments during a special season in which it hasn't lost a single team contest. "It's been one of the funnest seasons I've ever coached," LaCognata said. The Knights will challenge Bingham, Brighton, and Davis for the 5A state championship next week at Sugar house Park. After staying after the game for about 20 minutes to talk to Mountain View coach Chris Cooper and Roden, I was informed that American Fork had come back on Timpanogos and now led 10-8. As a result, I battled the construction con-struction traffic once again, running a couple of yellowish yellow-ish red lights along the way, to discover that I had only missed an inning of the marathon mara-thon contest. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the T'Wolves had loaded the bases. After a close play at the plate that was incorrectly called against the Cavemen, Rhett Nelson drilled a bases clearing double down the right field line to put Timpanogos back ahead to stay. It was an invigorating day right and ended the threat. Lehi realed off two more runs in the fourth inning to seal the win, and sent its seniors se-niors off with a victory. Scott Kappas did the rest as he pitched a solid game to record the win. Mike Newbury had three hits and a double to lead Springville's offensive of-fensive effort, Steve Nelson and Jeff Boyd had two hits as well. Orem scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but it was too little too late, Marc Morgan hit a homerun in and it's a great team sport. We have a unique set of talent and lots of team spirit." Any good coach knows that natural talent can only get you so far. But hard work can take you farther, and the Tigers have done that and therefore have continually improved throughout the season. Speaking about Gonzales' bunt, Cooper said that he was told to bunt the ball down the third base line, but that his player saw something in how the defense was set up and chose to bunt it hard toward second base.
