The ballroom concert is a showcase event the students can have fun with while introducing the excitement excite-ment and elegance of ballroom dancing to the audience. The I laymonds said that one of the biggest misconceptions the public has about ballroom dance is that it is boring. In fad, dance numbers often tell a story that may include lifts and tricks that can impress all ages. "Many people don't realize real-ize what it really is," Michelle Haymond said. "Ballroom dancing is entertaining for anyone - men, women, children, chil-dren, even teenagers." Brad and Michelle Haymond have created nearly all the choreography cho-reography for this event, both for solo and group numbers. As former BYU dance performers per-formers and competitive partners, part-ners, they are very familiar with how physically demanding demand-ing dance can be. Owens has experience in soccer and gymnastics, gym-nastics, and looked to dance as a different type of physical challenge to stretch his skills. "I love being active and it's fun to perform and compete," Oweas said. For other students, the theatrical theat-rical nature of ballroom dancing danc-ing Ls the most fun. The waltz is graceful, while tango is passionate pas-sionate and aggressive and the foxtrot is a flirty type of dance. "The posture that you take on when you're on stage is the best part," Tiana Moe, a junior in the concert presentation, said. "I love taking on the personality per-sonality of every dance." The actual dances are only part of what makes ballroom dance an amazing presentation, presenta-tion, however. The audience members are not the only people who benefit from ballroom performances, however. According to the Haymonds, ballroom dancing teaches students stu-dents social skills such as commitment, com-mitment, teamwork and appropriate appro-priate gender roles like how a gentleman should treat a lady on and off the dance floor. Students Stu-dents also have the opportunity to realize new talents when they learn complicated dance numbers. "I really think ballroom is a way to teach students many different principles," Brad Haymond said. The biggest challenge the Haymonds have faced while organizing this concert is the erratic spring schedules of many students on the team. "This is the part of the year when people are burning out from all their activities," Michelle Mi-chelle Haymond said.
