Show Thursday, May 3, 2007 Utah County Jail garden helping low-income families Natalie Andrews DAILY HERALD As the state tries to beat the Japanese beetle infestation in Orem for the next three years, residents in the impacted area will be without their own homegrown home-grown produce. But the 5-acre garden at the Utah County Jail is coming to the rescue for the low-income families in the area, with buckets of fresh produce. The radishes at the inmate garden are already poking their red heads up. Adrian Hinton, Utah State University extension agent for horticulture in Utah County who advises inmates at the garden, said 50 families in the infested area Geneva, Suncrest and Orem North neighborhoods may qualify for assistance. The families will receive a certificate that allows them to go to the food bank and pick up their vegetables. "The Japanese beetle is a pretty serious threat," said Hinton, who is also involved in the beetle extermination project. The beetle, discovered in Orem in August, destroys gardens, trees and turf. It's one of the two most destructive insects in the United States. If left unchecked, state officials estimate that Japanese beetles could easily expand into other parts of Orem, Utah County and across the state, causing an estimated $150 million damage to residents' property, and threatening the state's landscaping and fruit industries. Residents in the infested areas are being asked to not harvest or consume produce from their gardens for the next three years. Also, the city and the state Department of Agriculture and Food are seeking each resident's permission to spray pesticides. Giving to the community is nothing new for the garden. Last year, the jail donated half of its produce, or 22 tons, to the Community Action food bank. All the seeds are donated to the garden, from Cooks Greenhouse, Carpenter Seed, Vineyard Nursery and Haasen Plants. "We're planning on giving them a lot more food this year," said Utah County Sheriff's Deputy James Baldwin, who helps the inmates garden throughout the summer, about the food bank. This year, the jail garden was expanded from 3-12 acres to 5 acres. Space is maximized and up to 80 inmates regularly help throughout each week in the garden. During harvest times, 60 workers will rush to get all of the vegetables picked before they spoil. The jail kitchen serves as many of the vegetables as it can, often serving vegetables as 50 percent of a meal. But, inmates can only eat so much, and the garden produces quite a bit. For example, there are 50 rows of corn, with 400 stalks of corn on every row. If three ears grow on each stalk, the garden is able to produce almost (0,000 ears of corn. The jail has two full-time workers who seed the garden, and inmates in the jail industries program care for the garden. and then move up to working in the community. Baldwin said the garden keeps inmates busy doing a productive task, instead of sitting in a cell talking to other inmates and dwelling on previous crimes. "Most of the guys who work in the garden, we don't see them come back," Baldwin said. The jail industries program is one of a few in the state to have a garden, and Utah County Sheriff's Lt. IX'nnis Harris said that calls have come in from jail officials across the state and the country, curious about stalling a garden. The Salt bike County Jail planted its first seeds this year. "It's theraX!iitic for them to get their hands in the dirt and think alxmt their life," Baldwin said.
