Maria Cordner is a parent volunteer for the program and for the special education life skills class that her son, Kevin, has attended at Aspen since kindergarten. Now a nine-year-old, Kevin has Down syndrome and autism. au-tism. His mother said she introduced intro-duced the idea of a disabilities awareness week to the PTA years ago, and it has been well-received well-received by students, teachers, and administrators, becoming a tradition. This year, Julie Reneer, another an-other mother of a child with a disability, is assisting Cordner with the program. "Our aim," Cordner said, "is to increase the quality of interaction between the students stu-dents with disabilities and their peers." Along with increasing peer acceptance and understanding, another purpose of the program pro-gram is to provide information for parents and educators on community resources that are available, Cordner said. This year's activities are built around the theme of "Recognizing the Possibilities" in individuals, and in the community, com-munity, Cordner explained. A rainbow motif has been used to illustrate diversity, and the students have been exploring the theme creatively through art and literature. The children are taught greater sensitivity through a variety of sensorymotor activities, by reading books that have characters with disabilities, dis-abilities, and by participating in service projects. This year, however, several of the classes are involved instead in a service project coloring pages for the "Kids On the Move Songbook." The songbook contains songs that parents can use as therapy in helping their babies and toddlers tod-dlers with disabilities to improve im-prove skills. The book is given to patrons who bring their children in for services at the Orem-based center. "We decided to do something some-thing for the community, rather rath-er than bringing someone here this year," Cordner said. Children have participated by writing essays about what they would do for people with disabilities. Some of those comments com-ments have been posted at the school. Samantha "Sam" Warnick, special education teacher, has prepared her students to do a musical presentation in the classrooms, singing and signing sign-ing a song about friendship, said Cordner. "As a legacy, every year we try to buy some books for the library with characters with disabilities," Cordner said, "and resources for teachers. The PTA supports us with a budget. bud-get. Little candy bar now, big candy bar later or big candy bar now and pay later. Before I tell you the details that could change your life and bring you out of debt forever, for-ever, you should understand one thing: My cousin is way cooler than I am. It's not that she thinks she's cooler than me; she doesn't have to. It's just the way things are. But it is this humility humil-ity and kindness that gives her an edge on pretty much any other kid. Right now, I want you to close your eyes and think about the most popular kids at Timpanogos. Hey, no peeking. peek-ing. Now, think about which of the super-jK'ks or super-babes super-babes is a kind, sincere, humble hum-ble person. Colette Covey? oticon Delta 4K 61,39500 That's what I thought too. So, I guess you think I'm pretty cool now. I'm Colette Covey's cousin. The best way for me to lessen the coolness gap is to tell this to as many people as possible. It makes me cooler and it brings her coolness down with a swift slice of associated nerdiness. It won't be long until she's only a couple of rungs higher than me on the social ladder. lad-der. That's enough to shake hands, if you stretch. As added proof of her coolness, cool-ness, she's teaching little kids about money. And being no idiot, she's using candy to do this. Now, I'm no financial advisor advi-sor but it seems pretty clear to me. You see, if you spend your money now, you can buy a candy bar. When you put your money into the bank account you get a big candy bar later. It's all very complicated, compli-cated, but they do a great job at teaching the kids. All I know is that if I write another four words I get a candy bar. E-mail Me: wyattfeltC'gmail.com Personal Hearing Device Better Hearing in about an hour!
