Vineyard duo tell their way to storyspinning finals Michael Rigert NORTH COUNTY SI AFF Some students at Vineyard Elementary School are telling some real whoppers, but instead in-stead of being scolded, they're being applauded for the creativity cre-ativity and delivery of their tall tales. Cassidy Jennings, a fourth grader, and Jessalyn Layton, a second grader, were both selected se-lected as finalists to represent the school at the district's Storytelling Sto-rytelling Auditions this month. Cassidy penned an original story she entitled "The Snow Diary" about a young girl who loved snow whose family moved from Utah to Texas. "She was really upset and bruin BRAYPEN SANTO Fourth term. It was her job to narrow down the 50 students who auditioned to two finalists to represent Vineyard Elementary Elemen-tary from the upper and lower grade levels. "I was looking for kids with great inflection and who told the story really well," Peterson said. Cassidy impressed Peterson with her creativity and preparation prepa-ration and Jessalyn's voice inflections in her telling of one of the stories from the Junie B. Jones children's book series well. Tomorrow the Jazz Band is going to state festival, which is a very great reward. We will be compared to many of the best bands in the state. In last week's edition of the Orem Times, there was a very well written article about a physics class launching what were called "trebuchets." I loved how Michael Rigert called me jubilant. What excellent excel-lent diction. I wanted to compliment com-pliment him on a well written article. "Jessalyn read the chapter just like she was telling her best friend," Peterson said. "It didn't sound like she was reading read-ing a story, just telling it in her own words." For many soft-spoken students stu-dents who don't typically find themselves in the limelight, participating in the storytelling auditions was an opportunity for them to shine in front of their classmates, she said. "They got a chance to be a star," Peterson said. "They know they tried something out of their comfort zone ... I think it's really been a confidence booster." fun launching them.
