Although the hot-hitting Idaho Ida-ho Falls had tallied 80 runs in its first 11 games coming into this weekend series in Orem, the Owlz were able to hold off the Chukars again, recording another 2-1 victory on Sunday after beating Idaho Falls by the same score on Saturday night. "Pitching's been our strong point," said Orem manager Tom Kotchman. "If we have good pitching, it gives us a chance, if we have good defense." de-fense." The Owlz skipper got what he wanted from a trio of hurlers on Sunday. Sean O'SuIlivan gave up four hits and a run while striking out three before leaving with stiffness stiff-ness in his shoulder. Anthony Sullivan picked up the win during his four innings of work in which he allowed just two hits and fanned a trio of batters. Then, hard-throwing hard-throwing Felipe Arrendondo slammed the door on Idaho Falls (8-5) during the final two innings. Arrendondo gave up a double but fooled Chukars batters and picked up three strikeouts. Sullivan, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Sunday, said it was satisfying to come through for his teammates. "It felt good to step it up X - I n fi ) -wtmm ' t T 4. if -- JEREMY HARMONNorth County Orem's Colby Overstreet (12) is tagged out at third by Idaho Falls' Shawn Hayes as the teams ace each other in Orem. when my team needed it," he said. "My fastball was going today, and that made it a lot easier to throw the changeup." With the two teams tied atop the standings entering the game, the victory by the Owlz (94) was important, especially looking ahead to potential tiebreaking methods in case of a tie at the end of the regular season. "We'll take wins when we can get them." Kotchman said, "Every win counts, but this is especially nice because of a potential head-to-head tiebreaker." tie-breaker." Offense came sparingly and late in the game for the Owlz almost identical to the previous previ-ous game. After Peter Bourjos singled through the infield and advanced ad-vanced a base on a bobble by Chukars' second baseman Kurt Mertins in the sixth inning, in-ning, he scored on an O.D. Gonzalez single to center field that tied the game at 1-1. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Johnson blasted his first homer of the season to left-center field to put the Owlz on top for good. It was Orem's only extra-base hit of the game. "I was just really focusing on putting the ball in play," Johnson said. "This win was very important; it gives us a lot of momentum and confidence." confi-dence." Idaho Falls got on the board first in the top of the third inning when Luis Castillo's single to left field plated Alvi Morel, who was on base after the first of successive singles. Chukars' starting pitcher Josh Cribb made his professional profes-sional debut, and made quite an impression. Cribb, who last pitched for Clemson going 9-0 9-0 for a Tiger team that qualified for the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. pitched four perfect innings while striking out four for Idaho Falls. Cribb, on a limited pitch count, was pulled after retiring retir-ing all 12 batters he faced. On Saturday night, Orem starter Amalio Diaz pitched very well against the Chukars, scattering six hits. "Diaz dodged a few bullets," said Orem manager Tom Kotchman. Kotch-man. "He had few balls that were hit hard off of him and went deep into counts a couple times, but he pitched well." Diaz only allowed one run while striking out four and walking one. The lone run came in the second inning as third basemen Brennan Herrera drove a double dou-ble to the right -center field gap that plated Luis Castillo, but the relay from second basemen Abel Nieves reached catcher Ricky Bambino in time to cut down Joe Dickerson who was trying to score from first. A night after the Owlz played 13 innings against instate in-state rival Ogden, the Orem bullpen needed the rest that Diaz provided. "He was exactly what the doctor ordered," said Kotchman. Kotch-man. "After going 13 innings three nights ago, and then again last night, we were a little bit short in the bullpen." Diaz kept the Owlz within striking distance until shortstop short-stop Ryan Mount deposited a Jason Godin offering onto the berm in left -center field to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh. "I'm not a home run hitter, but I guess that's what happens hap-pens when you hit a ball hard." Mount said. "I felt a lot better at the plate today after working work-ing with Kotch." "He's a smart player," Kotchman said of Mount. "He worked out early today and figured a few things out and that's him. He's not a home run hitter but the wind was blowing pretty hard at that time and it helped him." In the bottom of the ninth. Mount again came to the plate looking to start a late rally. The 6-foot-l Mount went with a 2-1 pitch to left field which ended up being a stand-up double. After Nieves grounded out to the pitcher and Bambino popped up to first, Bourjos hit a 2-2 pitch to right field as Mount motored around to score the game-winning run, just ahead of the tag. "I had confidence in Peter," said Mount. "As scxm as he hit it I knew I was going to score. It was a good job by Peter." "I'm just getting good pitches to hit in the right situations," situa-tions," Bourjos said of his second sec-ond game-winning hit in two nights. "I was just battling up there. 1 didn't want to strike out I wanted to put pressure on the defease and got the hit."
