I went down to the induction center on a Sunday, having only the clothes on my back. I showed my excuses, but the men in charge didn't take any of them: "You're drafted." "Can I at least go home?" "No, you're ours now." After being permitted to make a phone call, I was sworn in and put on a bus to Fort Ord. At lort ()rd one of my concerns, con-cerns, besides the financial support sup-port of my mother, was how I was going to make the S63 monthly payment for my new l!fi7 Camero on military pay? It would be repossessed. I then learned that I myself could set the terms of payment. "Can I pay just 10 cents a month?" I asked one of the Army's law officers. He said yes, if that's what I wanted to do; ultimately. I chose to pay $10 a month. My sister drove the car while I was in the army. For listings 800-366-9813x9453 were drafted for two years, if you remained stateside for a year and a day they couldn't send you to a war zone. I figured that if I kept volunteering for more and more specialized training, I might be able to stay stateside. So I determined that I would keep advancing in training. The top 10 of us from advanced ad-vanced infantry training had the option to go to noncommissioned noncommis-sioned officers school at Fort Bragg. I did fairly well there and was advanced to E-5. Then I had the opportunity to go to jump school, also at Fort Bragg. After that, I was assigned to a Fort Brag company for a several months. After all was said and done, I was only a couple of weeks away from being stateside state-side a year and a day. Then I was called up by a clerk in my division: "Sergeant, we've noticed in your paperwork paper-work that you've been stateside for nearly a year. We're going to put you on a plane to Vietnam tomorrow." I pleaded with the clerk, and he received permission to let me go home for Christmas, after I signed a paper to waive my right to stay stateside. At the turn of the year 1970-71, 1970-71, 1 flew to Vietnam by way of Alaska and Japan. When you get off the plane, you're hit with a heat wave that almost drains you physically by the time you get to the processing process-ing building. Vietnam even had its own smell. When I walked into the barracks, there was such a cloud of smoke that I could hardly see the other end of the barracks. "What's that smell?" I asked. "That's marijuana," I was told. We then had three days of in-country training: what to expect, what kind of weapons we'd be facing, land mines, how to use our M 16 rifles, and things like that. I Next week: Ryan Beuhring is soon engaged in firefights. These excerpts from local veterans are courtesy of the Orem Heritage Committee. Complete stories of the veterans will eventually be put on the Orem City Web site, www.orem.org. Readers aware of any veterans who have written about their military service are asked to arrange to have these archives in the Veterans History Project, Library of Congress.
