March 30, 2006 Joseph Lorenzo Barton 'Together Again' Joseph 'Duke' Major Jo-Marilyn Gibson Doel Joseph Lorenzo Barton, our loving lov-ing Father, Grandpa and beloved Grandpa Great, returned to the loving lov-ing arms of his beautiful wile Lola Owens Barton, thee days before his 87th birthday on March 21, 2006 in Highland, High-land, Utah. He was surrounded surround-ed by many members of his large family as he left this earthly life, Joseph was born March 24, 1919 in Tropic, Utah. He was the third child and first son born in a family of eleven children, to Leo Lorenzo Barton and Karma Johnson Barton. He married his eternal sweetheart, Lola Owens in the St. George Temple on November 1. 1939. His life has been full of service and love to his family, extended family and many friends throughout the years. He and Lola served three missions together in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Pennsyl-vania, Nauvoo, Illinois and Bristol, England. He learned at a young age to work hard and became a skilled carpenter. He loved to sing, play the guitar and trumpet, and dance. He continually used these talents to bless the lives of many. He will be remembered for his cheerful whistle, beautiful smile and unselfish unself-ish nature. He is survived by his 5 sons and 5 daughters: Joseph G. (Carolyn) Barton, Albany, Oregon; E. Kay (Carol) Barton, American Fork, Utah; Roma (Richard) Gilmore, Highland. Utah (New Zealand Missionaries); Janet (Jan T.) Bennett. Ben-nett. Henderson, Nevada; Shirley (Larry) Gibson. Highland. Utah; Jack (Vickie) Barton. Henderson, Nevada; Neal (Tammy) Barton, Panguitch, Utah; Richard (Corinne) Barton. Highland. Utah; Joyce Bennett. Ben-nett. Panguitch, Utah; Betty (Kimball) (Kim-ball) Wirig. Highland. Utah. He has forty -nine grandchildren, and 100 great grandchildren. His greatest joy was being surrounded sur-rounded by these little ones, a baby in each arm while singing softly to them. Also survived by sisters: Delilah Heaton, Alton, Utah: Sylvia Syl-via Kirkland, Washington, Utah; Mary Dawn (Norman) Cox, St. George, Utah: and brothers: June (Margaret Ann) Barton, St. George, Utah; Jay (Shirley) Barton, Snows Canyon, Utah; Karl (Carol) Barton, St. George, Utah; Bill (Lali) Young, Logandale, Nevada. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife. Lola, his parents, Leo and Karma and his brother. Garth; Sisters: Delna Kenworthy and Elsa Riding. Interment will be Saturday, March 25. 2006 at 1:00 P.M .in the Panguitch City Cemetery. Elaine Lott Dubois 1946 - 2006 Elaine Lott Dubois died at home on March 25, 2006. She was born in Lehi, Utah on December 14, 1946, a daughter of Benjamin J. and Violet Adamson Lott. She was educated in Lehi public schools. She married Lynn L Dubois on May 21, 1966. Their marriage was later sol- menized in the Provo temple in 1977. She earned a B.A. from the University of Utah. Elaine taught English at View-mont View-mont High School for nearly 30 years. She excelled in teaching her students a love of literature and was honored as Davis County School Secondary Educator of the Year in 1997. After forty years of marriage, she was still working to perfect Lynn's grammar. Elaine was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully faith-fully in many assignments. At the time of her death she was serving as a beehive advisor in the Greenfield Green-field Ward. 3!eej!eii since OW She is survived by her husband, Lynn, daughter Kelly, son Scott, and grandchildren, Bailey and Beau Davis. Also surviving are her brothers Robert and Dean Lott of Lehi and sister, Jane McCullough of Albuquerque. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, grand-father, and friend. Joseph Duane "Duke" Major, 77, of Pleasant Grove passed away peacefully peaceful-ly at his home on Wednesday, Wednes-day, March 22, 2006. He was born January 25, 1929 in Mesa, Arizona the youngest son of Heber LeRoy and Rosezilla duff Major. He married Joana Hobbs on September 1, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. Duke's father passed away when he was 15 months old. His family relocated to the Los Angeles area where he grew up and graduated from Huntington Park High School. Duke was always very social and friendly to everyone he met. He loved organizing and decorating for social events and parties, this talent continued throughout his life. Duke's lifelong passion for movies mov-ies began as a child going to the theater the-ater frequently with his sister while his mother worked. Throughout his life he had the opportunity to meet many of his favorite stars. Duke was a faithful member of the LDS Church. He served a 2 V 2 year mission to Uruguay and later served with Joana in Nauvoo, Illinois Il-linois which was a highlight of their married life. Duke served his country during the Korean Conflict in Salzburg, Austria where he furthered his theatrical the-atrical and party -throwing talents. After his military service he re-enrolled re-enrolled at BYU where he continued contin-ued his courtship with Joana. They made their first home in southern California where their four sons were born. They moved to the Manila Ma-nila area of Pleasant Grove in 1963 where the addition of a daughter completed their family. Duke worked most of his life as an architectural illustrator, interior designer, and landscape architect. He loved theatrical arts and started and operated several local theaters. He is survived by his wife Joana of Pleasant Grove; children: Drew (Mary), Orem: Douglas (Nancy), Paso Robles, CA; Dale (Dawna), Avon, UT; Darren (Susan), Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove; Julie, Kiev, Ukraine; 18 grandchildren; sister. Virginia Homer, Glendale, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Cluff and sister. Kathleene. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 25, 2006 in the Manila Stake Center, in American Fork. Friends were invited to call at the Old Manila Chapel in Pleasant Grove and at the church prior to services. Interment was in the Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi with full military honors. Jo-Marilyn's mortal life spent in loving, giving & learning learn-ing ended on March 26, 2006 in Springville, Utah after a long battle with cancer. Jo-Marilyn embraced this life on Febru ary 14th, 1925 in Rockford, Illinois, born to Byron Cullen Gibson and Marion Drusilla Haberer. She and her brother, Byron Cullen spent their childhood between there and Long Island, NY. She loved the outdoors, learning, exploring and, of course dancing. She graduated high school from South Side High School, Rockville Centre. NY, Class of '43. After high school she ventured off to New York City to be a dancer - and dance she did. She performed in New York, Ohio, Chicago and Las Vegas in the early 1940's with the Kathryn Duffy Dancers. She declared, however, that the happiest days of her life, were the times she spent as a mother. Married to James William Booker on April 30, 1949, she gave birth to Gary William, Jo-Ellyn and Douglas Lee. Her second marriage to Clarence Frank Doel on June 30, 1961, added Curtiss Newlin & Faith Allyson to an already beautiful family. While raising her children, she lived in Las Vegas, NV, Buffalo. NY and Fort Lauderdale, FL. She then moved to Provo. Utah and then Phoenix, Arizona. Her last few years were spent in Utah once again. Her joy in life was children, not only hers, but others as well. She had a nursery in her home for more than 30 years. She reveled in the smile of a child, the teaching of a mind so full of wonder, and found so much joy in their imagination. She is preceded in death by both parents, both husbands and son. Douglas Lee Doel. Her legacy of love, faith, sacrifice, sacri-fice, endurance, hope, forgiveness, hard work, and a love of learning, lives in the children she is survived by: Gary Doel, Jo-Ellyn Booker, Curtiss Doel, and Faith St. Clair; grandchildren Joey-Lyn Ruiz, Katie Mitchell, Lynda Baker, LI Walker, Holli Simmons, Derek, Jason, Ryan and Gavin Doel, Clayton, Cedric, Chynna and Ciara St. Clair; greatgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, Ryo and Jaelyn Ruiz, Brandon Meier and Douglys Mitchell; and brother, Byron Cullen Gibson. A viewing will be held Thursday, March 30th, 2006 at 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Walker Family Mortuary on 85 East 300 South, Provo, Utah. Funeral services will follow at approximately 11 a.m. Internment In-ternment will follow. Jo-Marilyn Gibson Doel will be laid to rest at the Provo City Cemetery. Newspapers win Utah Press Association awards . NORTH COUNTY STAFF North County Newspapers captured several awards at the annual convention of the Utah Press Association in St. George last weekend. The Lone Peak Press took four first places, one second and two thirds; the American Fork Citizen three firsts and four seconds; and the Orem-Ge-neva Times a first, two seconds and two thirds. The Pony Express Ex-press received a first place and two third places. The Lehi Free Press and Pleasant Grove Review Re-view each took a third place. Publisher of the North County Newspapers, Kirk Parkinson, Par-kinson, was on hand at the convention con-vention to receive the honors. "I was on my feet all night, collecting awards," he said. "I was thrilled about the number num-ber we received. Across the board we got a big share of the awards. "It speaks very well of the quality of the staff and our newspapers, not just writing, but photographs as well. In some categories, we captured first, second and third." Parkinson said the group's sister papers in the south part of Utah County also received six additional awards. The Lone Peak Press was honored with firsts for a sports and recreation special section, a feature photograph by Brian Wagner of a Cedar Hills pie-eating pie-eating contest, best front page design for a page created by Rachel Rybicki and best sports page, designed by Jared Cowley. Cow-ley. The American Fork Citizen took first place honors for general gen-eral news story for an article about flooding by Cathy Allred and Barbara Christiansen, editor's edi-tor's column by Marc Haddock, and general news coverage.
