City of Orem celebrates Arbor Day REVA BOWEN Times Reporter The City of Orem celebrated cele-brated Arbor Day in Utah on April 30 by planting 12 trees in the new Nielsen's Grove, the historic park located at about 2000 South Sandhill Road that is destined to become a "jewel" of the city. In brief remarks delivered deliv-ered to an audience consisting consist-ing of city staff, officials, Beautification Commission members, donors, and a few Nielsen's Grove neighbors, Orem City forester Marty Sheide said trees may not be uppermost in people's thoughts, but are something some-thing "we would really miss if they were not here." Sheide also announced that Orem, with about 4,000 trees under city ownership own-ership and care, has received the Tree City USA designation for the eleventh straight year. v4v If tk" Arbor Day addition... The fact that years shows the strong award, it was decided that the city has received the support given by the mayor, council, staff, and Beautification Commission, the city forester noted. Cody Fowler, volunteer coordinator for the city, took a moment to explain the "Weed Out Warriors" program, a plan under which volunteers will adopt the parterre flower beds in Nielsen's Grove and maintain main-tain them. Fowler said the program is made possible by the sponsors America First Credit Union, Evans Hairstyling College, and Sam's Club. Jessica Athay, operations manager with Sam's Club, along with Jan Peterson, chairman of the store's spirit committee, were on hand to present Mayor Jerry Washburn with a $500 check to go toward the Weed Out Warriors program. pro-gram. Times Correspondent With the first day of summer just 45 days away, the irrigation canals and ditches in Orem will soon be flowing with water, just as they have done since 1863, when early settlers with primitive tools dug a ditch from the mouth of Provo Canyon to get water. The exact date on which water from the Provo River will be turned into the Murdock Canal is never determined in advance, said Kelly Hansen of the Provo River Water Users Association, which controls the Murdock Diversion Dam near the mouth of Provo Canyon. "When one or more of the irrigation irriga-tion water users requests that the water to be turned into the Murdock Canal on a certain date, that is when the gates are opened," he said. "Typically, the water is turned in around May 7, according to the need," he said. Describing how the water makes its way down from the Provo River, and then, flows uphill to Orem at 800 North Street, is a lesson in something some-thing apparently defying the law of gravity. "The elevation of the Murdock Diversion Dam is at least two feet higher than Orem's ditch on 800 North, allowing gravity to route the water from the dam up to the Orem ditch, which is two feet lower than the dam," Hansen said. The ditch, which originally measured meas-ured two and one-half feet deep and six feet wide, carried the precious water out over 2000 acres of parched ground to bring life to the desolate area. As land cultivation increased, the need for more water grew, accordingly. according-ly. In June 1865, the homesteaders petitioned the Territory of Utah for additional water from the Provo River. The petition was granted, and on Dec. 18, 1865, the Provo Bench Canal and Irrigation Co. was formed. Over the years, irrigation canals and ditches were dug throughout the community, which was to become the Town of Orem in 1919. Continued on page A12 f '-MiV-.; I IP I i Orem connection... Republican candidates for governor meet forym REVA BOWEN Times Reporter Utah County got a taste of the race for the Republican Party's nominee nomi-nee for governor of the state Monday when the Utah County Republican Women hosted a candidates' candi-dates' forum at the Provo Library. Eight candidates or their designees were represented rep-resented at the meeting, a prelude -to- the state Republican convention, which will be held on Saturday, May 8th , and should winnow the field of candidates to two finalists for a primary election. Scott Matheson, Jr., is unopposed as the nominee of the Democratic Party. Candidates attending Monday's event in person included Governor Olene Walker; Utah House Speaker Marty Stephens; state Board of Regents chair Nolan Karras; state Senator Parley Hellewell; and Dr. Gary Benson. Standing in for other candidates were Amy Hansen, daughter-in-law of former U.S. Representative Jim Hansen; Mary Kay Huntsman, wife of businessman busi-nessman Jon Huntsman, Jr.; and Lou Ann Christensen, Brigham City mayor and candidate for lieutenant governor with Fred Lampropoulos. Each of the candidates, or their representative, was given an equal amount of time to introduce intro-duce themselves, and to respond to several questions ques-tions gleaned from- the audience. Leading off the candidates candi-dates was Olene Walker, who told the group that she grew up on a farm west of Ogden where she topped and thinned beets, and helped with the work of a dairy farm. She met her husband at Brigham Young University, then went on to receive a degree from Stanford; he attended Harvard business busi-ness school. The Walkers are the parents of seven children.
