Show Times Newspaper Thursday, October 16, 2003 Page B5 147 Orem Residents Complete the St. On Saturday, October 4, 147 Orem Residents ran the St George marathon. This was the 27th year of the 26.2 mile course and the largest in the history to finish. This year 4,506 runners crossed the starting line and 4,400 finished. This was an increase of more than 200 runners that have finished the course. It was a very hot year weather wise but the race went well. There was a few medical calls for dehydration, dehy-dration, there was really only one other incident related relat-ed to the marathon. The marathon is the city's biggest single-day event in terms of economic impact, luring about 10,000 people to Southern Utah. Chris Waddell in the wheel chair division sat a new record for the course on wheels with a time of 1:18:17. Wardell hit speeds of 50 mph on a couple of downhill down-hill stretches that provided essential momentum for him as he attacked the hills. He is 35 years old and entered his first marathon 11 years ago. Trevor Pettingill of Park City took the men's victory with a time of 2:20:35. Trevor is 27 and he finished 10th in the St George Marathon in 2002, that was the beginning of his marathon career. Trevor is a former BYU steeplechaser. Trevor finished ahead of the Olympic qualifying time of 2:30:00. Trevor was projected project-ed to finish 15th. He said the race was anyone's to win and was quick to credit those around him for his victory, including the group of eight runners who were joking and having a great time as they urged each other throughout various parts of the race. Katie Blackett of Boulder, Colorado was the overall winner in the women's division. divi-sion. She had a time of 2:40:25. Katie is a heptath-lete heptath-lete and triple jumper. She is new to marathoning, only started in 1999. She already qualified for the Olympic trials tri-als in a previous marathon. Katie was impressed by the weather, the course and treatment she received from the St George marathon. This is why she and thousands thou-sands of other runners put mind and body through the grueling tune-up for 26.2 miles of ultimate excruciation excrucia-tion and fulfillment. You never feel like you have as many friends as you will when you run a marathon. Katie and Trevor get an all expense paid trip to Ibigawa, Japan to run in the marathon in November as well as a treadmill each, a unique plaque, and Maverik cash coupons. The overall masters winners also get to go to Japan and compete. Paul Sabin of Orem won the Del Monte Special Achievement Award that is given to recognize outstanding outstand-ing effort. He was nominated by his wife Gaylene and son Scott. Paul has run 17 marathons 15 of them in St George. Paul was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease soon after he ran his last marathon in 2002. He was awarded a 3-foot trophy tro-phy and was totally surprised sur-prised by the award. When asked why he began running in 1987 he said for the pain and the T-shirt. Paul has loved running and misses it very much. He is always impressed at how well the St George marathon is run. This is the best race that is ever put on with all the support sup-port of the volunteers and the people of St George who come out and cheer you on. This was his first year to be a spectator and cheer for his wife and watch other runners. run-ners. He said his body will be at the finish line but his heart will be on the course this year. Congratulations to all the runners.
