Show Times Newspaper Thursday, July 24, 2003 Page All t Give Youth and Families with Promise, a mentor program focused on at-risk families, invites dedicated individuals to become stable and caring role models for youth. Youth and Families with Promise matches college-aged volunteers vol-unteers with one youth between the ages of 10 and 14 to build a relationship of friendship and trust. Community members widen the horizons of the youth they work with; they open a new world to these youth with options as simple sim-ple as going to college. Volunteers meet once every week or seven to 10 days with their youth to participate in activities, such as 4-H clubs and service projects, proj-ects, to build friendships and trust. Volunteers also use a curriculum that has been developed for Youth and Families with Promise to help the youth improve in certain developmental devel-opmental areas, such as social skills and academic skills. Youth and Families with Promise sponsors a Family Night Out where the whole family is invited to come to a fun, safe place. Dinner is served, followed by learning exercises on different topics: top-ics: Communications, cooperation, service and gratitude. Youth and Families with Promise is accepting applications to run a 4-H club with the youth in the mentor program once a week at various elementary schools. This is a great way to interact with the youth in a group setting. Volunteers are asked to provide transportation transporta-tion if possible. Volunteers are provided pro-vided with training and ideas for activities. Other volunteer opportunities in Utah County include: Share your time and experience. All members of the community are invited to volunteer at the Utah State Hospital, an agency that treats Utah residents with mental illness services: Psychiatric care, psychological counseling, nursing services, recreational therapy, occupational therapy and social services for children, adolescents, adults and seniors. A variety of opportunities are available, ranging rang-ing from working with patients one-on-one and providing physical therapy to uplifting children in the elementary school and staffing the snackshop. Activities are enabled to continue contin-ue with help frorri community members. Religious organizations, clubs, groups of friends or families can tie quilts for the children to take home with them. The Utah State Hospital continually provides pro-vides activities for their residents. Community groups can help plan and assist in Utah State Hospital's Volunteer Activity Night every Tuesday night. The Cambry House offers a variety of volunteer opportunities oppor-tunities for individuals interested in serving elderly residents. Individuals are encouraged to be adopted by a grandparent by visiting visit-ing a specific resident weekly. During evening meals, volunteers are invited to come and visit with residents. Ongoing activities with which volunteers can become involved include: Bingo, daily Family Home Evening and field trips. Volunteers help improve the quality of life for the residents and contribute to the happiness they feel. With individual attention from volunteers, residents go from feelings of loneliness to knowing that someone cares.
