SCERA Children's Choir announces fall registration The SCERA Children's Chorus, Cho-rus, under the direction of Susan Su-san Abbott and Emilee Knell, continues its sixth season with the fall 2000 session. "Susan has taken to heart our ideals that the arts should be a learning experience, not only in music education and performing experiences, but in good, basic values of cooperation, accomplishment accom-plishment and self-esteem," SCERA President Norm Nielsen said. , Registration is now open and will continue through the end of September. There are no auditions audi-tions necessary and there will be a place for every child who wants to sing. The four-month winter choir term, which will run Sept. 6 through Dec. 21, 2000, will culminate cul-minate with several public Christmas concerts for the more than 100 children involved. Continuing Con-tinuing and new students, ages 3 to 15, are encouraged to participate. par-ticipate. Classes will receive a foundation in rhythm, sing music mu-sic from famous composers and folk songs from around the world, explore instruments and play fun singing games. SCERA's music academy is made up of four separate choirs. The top two choirs, The Young Musicians, ages 11-15 and the Troubadours, ages 8-11, will meet Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with a tuition of $120. The Little Singers, ages 6-8 will meet Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., tuition is $100. The Mini Singers meet on Wednesdays, tuition $75, with a class for kin-dergartners kin-dergartners from 4:30-5 p.m. And a class for 3-to-4-year-olds from 5-5:30 p.m. A $15 non-refundable registration fee is included in-cluded in the cost of tuition. Auditions for "High Society" at Springville Playhouse set The Springville Playhouse will conduct auditions for the comedymusical com-edymusical "High Society," featuring fea-turing music by Cole Porter, on Aug. 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. and Aug. 26 from 1 1 a.m. to noon at the playhouse, located on the lower level of the Springville Civic Center, 50 South Main (under (un-der the Springville library). Youth Symphony amends mission statement j The Board of Directors of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra has officially amended its mission statement. The original mission statement state-ment declared that "The purpose of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Sym-phony Organization is to support sup-port aesthetic development of our youth and community through music." The new mission statement broadens the scope of "aesthetic development", to also include "social and intellectual development." develop-ment." The new mission statement state-ment reads: "The purpose of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Organization is to support aesthetic, aes-thetic, social and intellectual development of our youth and community through music." In responding to the need for changing the mission statement, the Youth Symphony Board observed ob-served that music appreciation is more than just learning about music. It has been proven in many recent studies that music education actually enhances en-hances the social and intellectual intellec-tual development of young people. As noted by the National Association or Music Merchants at its recent convention in Los Angeles, "Making music makes you smarter." Exhaustive studies stud-ies by many respected institutions institu-tions reach the same conclusion, that music education strengthens strength-ens the very skills needed for success in higher education. "Changing the mission statement state-ment to include a broader definition defi-nition of educational benefits also increases our responsibility to the talent education of the youth," Executive Director Brent Taylor, noted.
