Show Times Newspaper Integrated pest management provides alternative to pesticides "Gardeners should try integrated inte-grated pest management techniques tech-niques as an answer to the recent re-cent EPA ban on Dursban and other pesticides containing the insecticide chbrpynfos," says Diane G. Alston, Utah State University Extension entomologist entomolo-gist and associate professor in the Department of Biology. "Integrated pest management (IMP) is an approach to pest control that combines a variety of methods, such as cultural, biological and chemical controls, to prevent pest damage," explains ex-plains Alston. "For years IPM programs have been working on effective, multi-tactic approaches that will continue to work even if any one tactic - for instance. Utah County Insurance Broker appointed to IHC Utah County Board Utah County insurance broker, bro-ker, Marilyn Devey, has been appointed to the volunteer regional re-gional governing board for In-termountain In-termountain Health Care's Utah County hospitals and clinics. Devey, who is a principal in Timp Benefits and Insurance company, has more than 17 years experience in the insurance insur-ance industry and is a licensed agent, specializing in health insurance. in-surance. Timp Benefits is one of the largest health insurance brokerage bro-kerage firms in Utah County. A native of Lehi, Devey said she is excited about this opportunity oppor-tunity to represent the interests of employers and employees and the health insurance arena to IHC's hospitals and physicians. Employers, want to give their employees the very best health benefits package possih! -, 'ut are constrained by the rising cost of health care, particularly prescription costs, and are concerned con-cerned about access to health care services, Devey said. Small employers are particularly feeling feel-ing the pinch of health care cost pressures. There is a large-scale need to educate consumers about the true costs of health care, she said. Most employees, have no concept of how much their employer em-ployer is contributing to their insurance premium each month, unless they go on COBRA (a government law that allows employees to continue to pur- SERVING UTAH COUNTY Orem Store only. It will likewise be phased out of all products for schools and parks. Dursban has been one of the most commonly used insecticides for more than three decades and is an ingredient of sprays and powders for everything from ants, cockroaches and grubs to mosquitoes, termites and wasps. Another formulation of chlorpyrifos is sued in many chase their existing health insurance in-surance when they change jobs). Some employers have actually ac-tually started listing the price of the monthly premium on the employee's pay checks. Devey also said many employers employ-ers are seeking new benefit packages pack-ages that re-introduce an old concept - and annual deductible. When people are responsible for a greater part of the cost of health care, they tend to make different choices than when they are insulated from that cost, she said. Devey believes residents of Utah County have access to excellent ex-cellent health care services and she is happy to be a part of the oversight of those services. A resident of Lindon, Devey joins 22 other community leaders lead-ers on the board, who represent a wide variety of professional expertise and geographic residency resi-dency in the community. The governing board is charged with overseeing the operations of Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Orem Community Hospital Hos-pital and American Fork Hospital. Hospi-tal. The board is responsible for approving appointments to the medical staff and reviewing the hospitals' quality program and community initiatives. Devey will serve as a member of the strategic planning and finance committee of the board. She and her husband, Richard Devey, ai e the parents of four children. "After the chemical officially goes off the market, homeowners will still be able to buy several other insecticides. But for people who are asking, 'What next? Are there other ways to deal with pests?,' Integrated Inte-grated pest management offers the whole spectrum of control options, with an emphasis on reducing risks to humans and the environment," Alston says. In the home and grounds arena, for instance, a wide variety vari-ety of control tactics fits the bill, she advises. Many pest control methods that involve a bit more labor and attention but work just as well as insecticides, are available. Such control tactics include: sanitation to remove necessary neces-sary food, water, breeding sites and "hiding places" barriers to entry such as screens and caulking foundation cracks biological treatments (including (in-cluding bacillus thuringiensis -bt - bacteria sprays, natural products such as pyrethrin, garlic gar-lic and mint, releasing biological biologi-cal control organisms such as parasitic nematodes) baits with an attractant for the insect and a low rate of insecticide in-secticide or natural control pest traps ("roach motels," traps for snails and slugs, earwigs, ear-wigs, wasps and hornets) repellents encouraging naturally occurring occur-ring predators of insects such as predatory and parasitic insects, and swallows and bats by providing pro-viding attractive foods, shelter and habitat next removal of stinging bees and wasps (qualified professionals profes-sionals only!) as a last resort, properly applied pesticides.
